In this video, the journalist will talk about the good life of the twenty-one centuries, in fact she realizes a description on how American live and she gives a new way of living more turned around the community and creativity.
The American dream was exported across borders, so kids in Brazil, France or Kenya inherit of this picture which repose on the idea that the next generation will live better that the last generation. But, per a poll, today, most parents do not think that their kids will be better off than they were.
The starting point of its analysis is the term “better off”, and she wants to know what it means. Perhaps, is about it earning more? While as she says, median per capita income has been flat since about 2000… So, is better off finding a secure job? in a context of rising unemployment…
Thereby, Courtney Martin brings us another vision of this term. Because, the wake of the Great Recession more and more American are redefining what “better off” really means. This vision is more to do with community than dollars and cents.
When she talks of the neglect of poor by policies but also by some American more concerned by their own problems, while poor people practice better the art of living. I’m agree with her argument, because in my opinion the most vulnerable are those who know the true value of things and who appreciate simplicity and sharing.
She considered the recession as the father of consciousness and it confront us with profound questions.
The first is “How should we word”. To answer to this question, the journalist insists on the fact that we should work as your mother. Indeed, there are jobs dedicated to women, as littles ones or aging ones. Women are more able to understand human conditions.
According to me, even if inequalities between men and women has decrease, but they have not disappeared. Today women have access to a portfolio career, but some trades are still reserved to men. The main inequality concern the gap between the salary of a man and a woman.
The second question is “how should we live” and she pointed the importance to come back like our ancestors. Today, in western society for example we think that the individual house is the solution, a sign of self-possession, but this acquisition delimited by a white picket fence divide us. Some people reject this type of privatizing life and reclaiming the interdependence instead. We can say that in France, for me, people are individualist, not the majority… but many of them. So, the experience that the journalist present you, in cohousing community seem to be a good way to reject the individualism.
The people who live with her, are all different ages and political persuasions and professions. They have their home but they share all domestic labor in a common kitchen. This way of life permit to develop relationship. The journalist insists on the fact that the new better off is not an individual prospect at all.
She exhibits her American dream! With more compassion for the poor, more social protection, more sharing and relationship between people. For her, all these changes in lifestyle would allow people to be happier
