COLONY season 1

Post by Kevin Thiebault on Tue Jan 31, 2017 9:46 am

I chose to watch season 1 of the COLONY series, I do not know this series and I have never heard of it but the main actress Sarah Wayne Callies has played in several series like Prison break or The walking dead, two Series that I liked that is why I chose this series.

Episode 1:

In this first episode we are presented what seems to be the two main actors Will and Katie since it is they who are present on the poster of the series, it is a couple and their children. This first episode takes place in Hollywood where the family resides, the city is cut in half by a huge wall and we do not know what is behind for the moment, the actors presents it just as "factory". The whole city is under permanent tension, there is a curfew at nightfall, drones fly over the city all day and the army chooses daily to take residents to the "factory". In this episode, Will decides to go to the other side of the wall by hiding in a truck but he gets caught in checking when crossing the wall, however he is not going to be sent to the factory but chooses by Officials to track down resistance in his city since his former identity as an FBI agent was discovered.

EP 02:

In this second episode Will begins his first day in his new job for the enemy but at the same time we find that his wife Katie, secretly enters the resistance thinking that it was necessary to protect her family.
Throughout the episode we realize that Will's stalking against the resistance will be complicated and slowed down because of the discussions he has with Katie on his return from work in the evening. Indeed Katie asks many questions to Will on his work day when he returns in order to inform the resistance in turn so that they always have a head start.
The series becomes thrilling, after a first episode quite calm in which we had to set the scene, this second episode is more captivating and makes you want to watch the rest quickly !

Finally I don’t find the motivation to watch this series because there is little action, moreover I’m not a big fan of science fiction like here with drones, which is why I decided to look again a series that I liked, it is Homeland, a new season is being broadcast that allows me to situate the context before watching this new season.

The first episode talks about the rescue of an American prisoner of war, Sergeant Brody, released after 8 years of capture in Iraq. During his release, Carrie Madison, a CIA agent, learns from a reliable source that a former American detainee has altered his camp. Carrie immediately thought that Sergeant Brody had been issued to commit an attack on American soil. This episode is already very rhythmic with action quickly, notably with the surveillance (camera + microphone) of the whole house of the family of Brody followed 24/24 by Carrie without the authorization of the CIA. Many people are already discovered, including some members of the CIA, who feel the importance of their presence for the next episodes. Homeland is a series that I appreciate because every episode ends up leaving a lot of suspense to the viewers, the scenarios are really well thought out to make anyone addict to this series.

In this second episode, Carrie Madison finally succeeds in obtaining a warrant allowing her to legally monitor Sergeant Brody, through one of her many sources she learns that the leader of terrorism is present on American soil, it is Abu Nazir, the same terrorist who allegedly was the torturer of Brody and who would have "returned" him.
The majority of the episode also shows Brody's difficulties in reintegrating his family life after so many years of isolation. There is always a lot of rhythm and suspense, in this series the characters are very active, very few scenes take place in the same place and each scene advances the series, not like the series "Colony" for example that I had started and in which one has the impression that some scenes are there to fill the few missing minutes.

The third episode is a bit sad because during this episode the source of Carrie, that which allowed her to learn the presence of Abu Nazir, died.
On the other hand, Brody's relationship to the breasts seems to be getting better and better, which is pleasant for the viewer because the disputes between mother and daughter or the difficulty of exchanging between father and children were rather embarrassing.
Carrie Madison continues to monitor the family 24 hours a day thanks to the surveillance system in their home but her internal relations with the other CIA members become complicated because few people believe the trail of terrorism regarding Sergeant Brody.
As a viewer, we are somewhat frustrated because we would like Carrie to advance more in its investigation but it is slowed down in its progress because most of its entourage does not believe in it and in this case of terrorism linking Abu Nazir and the Sergeant Brody, she finds no support and must act alone.

The fourth episode is intriguing enough. First of all, Carrie is obliged to put an end to family supervision because the four weeks granted have passed, leaving us with an unfinished taste.
Sergeant Brody shows up more and more to the media and gives more and more interviews, for Carrie this is a strong signal, comforting her in her theory of preparation for an attack. The CIA has finally a track for a possible transfer of funds to finance a future attack.
This episode allows us to understand a little better the ultimate goal of this first season. Carrie no longer has the right to video surveillance she decides to spy Brody directly in front of him in her car.
The last scene is disturbing and leaves us feeling uncompleted since Carrie followed Brody during a night out and she manages to start the discussion with him and a game of seduction seems to take hold.

In the fifth episode the CIA captured Sergeant Brody's former torturer.
The CIA then calls Brody to interview him, during this interview Brody indirectly tells his former torturer that he is still on their side and determined in his plan of attack, the two men simulate a brawl during which Brody slips a razor blade into the inmate's pocket so that he can commit suicide so he does not have to make any revelation that could jeopardize his joint venture with Brody.
A troubling episode during which on several occasions one seems to lose the thread but finally everything becomes clear at the end of the episode.
There are several flashbacks in this episode which allows viewers to learn a bit more about what happened during Brody's 8 years of detention and thus understand a little better how Brody came to change of camp.
