In episode 2 of season 1 Rick finds himself in a tank. Rick escapes from the tank thanks to the help of Glenn, whom he did not know yet, whose voice he heard on the radio. Rick and Glenn meet with Glenn's companions, another group of survivors who came to refuel at the supermarket. However, the eventful arrival of Rick puts them all in peril, the attention of the zombies having been attracted to their hiding place. Besieged by the zombies, the group manages to communicate by radio with the group of Shane and Lori, but they decide not to help, the presence of Rick has not yet been communicated to them. In the small group cloistered inside the supermarket, tensions are exacerbated, especially between T-Dog, a black and Merle Dixon, a racist white, which leads Rick to intervene by handcuffing Merle to a pipe on the roof of the Rick and Glenn plan their escape from the always besieged store, the idea is to cover themselves with flesh and guts of dead bodies to mask their odor too recognizable to be able to walk among the zombies and reach trucks. In spite of the rain which had almost thwarted this plan, the group managed to escape, in a van for Andrea, Jacquie, T-Dog, Morales and Rick and a car for Glenn. Only Robin misses the call after T-Dog accidentally lost the key in a pipeline, leaving Merle tied to the pipe. Only precaution: the access door to the roof has been padlocked to preserve as much as possible Merle zombies.

In episode 4 of season 1:
In search of Merle, the group also tries to find the bag of weapons, but another group of survivors, also in search of weapons, attacks them. The group manages to capture an injured attacker, Miguelito, but the other attackers flee by car and take Glenn as a hostage. After interrogating their hostage, Rick and his comrades learn the location of the hiding place of their opponents and hope to proceed with an exchange of prisoners. The second group led by their leader Guillermo, alias "G", refuses, demanding the bag of arms in addition to the prisoner. The bloodbath is prevented by the arrival of an elderly person (the grandmother of a Hispanic) who puts an end to the confrontation. Rick Grimes and his companions realize that the bellicose image their hosts give themselves is merely a façade: this "gang" is in fact made up of former employees of a retired boarding school for elderly people still occupied by the Boarders, as well as members of their families, who hide and attempt to protect themselves from ranger attacks. Rick leaves them a few weapons for their defense and each group leaves on its side, in full. When they picked up the van, they discovered that Merle had stolen it and had probably gone to the idea of taking revenge for the survivors still in the camp. Meanwhile, the camp is attacked by surprise by a group of prowlers. Several members are killed, including Amy, Andrea's younger sister and Carol's husband Ed. Rick's group arrives at the camp just in time to eliminate the last stalkers and save the rest of the group. Before that, one of the members of the group, Jim, had a dream where he was digging holes in the ground but when he woke up he did not remember why he was digging. At the time of the attack, he remembered it: it was to bury the dead of the group.
