Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Oct 04, 2020 2:59 pm

On this week APP, i will review 3 moments that happenend in the end of september. We begin with the swedish superstar : Mondo Duplantis. The 20 years old pole vaulter who broke the indoor world record in pole vault with an astonishing 6m18. (6m16 was the previous mark and was set by Renault Lavillenie in 2016) has done it again in the Diamond League meet in Rome. Before the pole vault contest, the outside world record was hold by Sergei Bubka at a height of 6m14. Duplantis tried to break that record many times early in the season but never succeed. The Rome meeting was the last competiton of the Swedish’s season. Mondo starts as usual at 5m60 and he clears the bar with a hyge margin. Then, he cleared 5m70, 5m85 and 6m. A pretty normal pole vault competition for Mondo Duplantis so far. The bar raises at 6m15, synonym of a world record. Duplantis fails his first attempt. He makes some adjustements with his dad who is also his coach. Duplantis waits at the end of the runway with his iconic yellow pole, the judge raises the white flag and the young swedish sets off for his second attempt. He clears the bar with a small margin and while he falls on the mat, the bar stays on and It’s a new world record. Duplantis takes the crown from The legend Sergeï Bubka 26 years later. At 20 years old, Mondo Duplantis hold both outdoor and indoor wolrd records in the pole vault. The fututre is bright for him and his coach/dad. The next stop for the young superstar is the 2021 Olympics games in Tokyo. A new reign has begun in the pole vault and Duplantis is the king of this event. Next, we’re gonna talk about the F1 grand prix of Monza where an unexpected result happened. After the qualifications in Saturday, Hamilton is on pole and Bottas locks up the front row for Mercedes, Sainz is in third place for McLaren. On Sunday, It will be a completly different story. As usual, It’s lights out and away we go, the beginning of the race is pretty normal, It looks like another 1-2 for Mercedes but Kevin Magnussen has an engine Failure with his HAAS car. The safety car is on track and the pits are closed but Hamilton, who didn’t saw the warning, went in the pits. As a result, he will get a 10 seconds penalty from the FIA stewarts. Next with 23 laps left, Charles Leclerc has a big crash in his ferrari and that cause a red flag and the restart of the session for all the drivers. Pierre Gasly, the frenchman from Alpha Tauri is the clear winner of this incident because from the restart to the end, he will stays in first place and wins it in Monza. An outsanding performance for Gasly. He starts tenth on the grid, has a brilliant strategy, manage perfectly his tyres and he has an really strong pace. That’s an historical win because it’s been 24 years since a french driver won a F1 Grand Prix and 12 years since The Alpha Tauri won a Grand prix. Sainz and Stroll take second and third place. I will finish with the results of The Tour de France, the most prestigious race in cycling. Because of the Covid-19, The race was in september instead of July. Egan Bernal was the favorite because he’s the reigning winner of this race. The Tour de France has a completly new route wich was more favorable for the climbers. This 2020 tour de France was very exciting because we saw attacks from the favorites like in 2019 with Alaphillipe. This years, Roglic and Pogacar were the mens to follow. The battle for the Yellow jersey takes end in the penultimate stage of the Race in a time trial in Jura where Pogacar reclaims the Maillot Jaune from Roglic and he kept it the day after in Paris for the win of the Tour de France.

Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Oct 11, 2020 10:05 pm

On this week APP, i will review some major events that happened this week. Let’s begin with Raphael Nadal who wins Roland Garros for the 13th time in his career, his 20th win in a Grand Chelem Tournament. Nadal equals the record hold by Federer. Nadal dominated head and shoulders above the number 1 player in the world Novak Djokovic. The king of Roland Garros won in 3 sets (6-0, 6-2, 7-5) and claim another crown in Paris. Another good news for France : Julian Alaphillipe is the new road cycling world champion. After a really tense race in Imola, the frenchman finished first 24 seconds ahead of Van Aert. He produced his effort with 12 km left in the race and went on a show. 11 km in solo, Alaphillipe fought hard for maintaining his lead on the rest of the field. But all this fight was worth it, next season, he’ll wear the rainbow jersey. Next, i will talk about the NBA and the bubble in Orlando. When I’m writting this APP, the Miami Heats won Game 5 of the NBA finals and the Lakers have a 3-2 lead. First things first, to see the Heat in the NBA finals is really amazing. The last time the florida franchise was battleing for the Title in 2014 with Lebron James and Dwyane Wade. Talking about Lebron James, It’s his 10th appearance in The Finals and potentially his fourth ring. The kid from Akron went on an impressivee run in the playoffs with the lakers, loosing only 3 of their 15 games. On the other side of the bracket, the Toronto Raptors, the reigning champs lost in the 2nd round against the celtics. The surprise came from Miami, the outsider of the East Coast. They made it to the Finals, thanks to Jimmy Butler who plays at an Outstanding level and carry his team on his shoulders. He has an phenomenal leadership, he makes his teammates better and he is a scoring machine on the floor. I think, even if The Heat looses the finals, we should gave the final MVP trophee to Jimmy Butler because he’s on another level, another planet during the whole playoffs in Orlando. So Heat-Lakers, James vs Butler, to be continued. Another surprising result happened on Sunday in Germany. For the return of the nurburgring in the F1 calendar, the reservist F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg has done a extrordinary performance regarding of the circustances. He starts last on the grid for the Eifel GP and finished in 8th place. That’s already impressive but the amazing part is that Hulkenberg doesn’t have the same practice as the other drivers. In fact, all he has was the qualifications on Saturday for knowing the car and the circuit. He was out in Q3 so he really doesn’t have a lot of time for be prepared for the race. But he did a superb race and finished P8. Also, Lewis Hamilton equals Schumacher for the most wins in F1 with 91 first places. Verstappen takes 2nd place for Red Bull and Ricciardo took the 3rd step of the podium for renault wich is the first time for the team since 2014.

Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:05 pm

On this week’s APP, I will try a new format : Biography. I decided to talk about Serguei Bubka, a pole vault legend. He is a six time world champion, Olympic and European Champion as well. He has set 35 world records during his career. In his prime, he was unbeatable. The other incredible thing was how he has such a strong impact on his discipline. Pole vault has always been a spectacular event and became more and more spectacular beacause of the technology. With the technological advance, the pole vaulters were able to jump higher and higher, thanks to new poles composed in new materials. The 5m barrier was passed, the event began to be more popular because of his spectacularness and his dangerousness. But for the athletes, it was really difficult because track and field at the time doesn’t give you a lot of money. You can’t live due to track and field. Being an Olympic champion doesn’t make you rich. Then, the tv has arrived so track and field was watched by more people and for powerfull brands, it was more interesting to invest, to sponsor this sport because of the new visibility that this event has. Bubka began his professional career in 1980. When he broke his first world record in 1983 at the age of 19, the world began to see the potential of this young Athlete. He was the first man to pass the legendary barrier of 6 meters. He achieved it in a international meeting in Paris. He came to Paris because the organisator says he will offer him 10 000 dollars if he broke the world record. In track and field, this type of offer was completly new. Bubka knew he can lives due to pole vault. He just need to broke the world record has many times has he can. Between 1986 and 2000, he broke 27 times his own world record. He was an event by himself. At every meet, thousands of people came to see Bubka broke his world record by a centimeter. He was a superstar, a showman. Stadiums were full because of him. A new way to organise a meet was create because of Bubka. Lots of brands wanted to sponsor the meet for more visibility. The meetings offer bigger and bigger offers for a new world record. Serguei Bubka Has changed track and field into a more visible and more lucrative sport. Also, he improved a lot the technique of his sport. He was an example. Coaches all arround the world have tried to teach his pole vault technique. Bubka has massively improved the lifestyle of athletes. Before athletes don’t really have the time to train properly because they needed to work, to find a job at the same time for live. In the Bubka’s era, athletes could be sponsorised and earn money. This was not a lot of money of course, but this was a good progress. Also, the athlete’s work has been taken more seriously by the nationals federations. Athlete can now have help from the State so they can focus 100% on their training thanks to Bubka. Track and field began to have more sponsors, more money for helping athletes. He was one of the most dominant athlete in track and field of all time. He was really famous, Bubka was a proper superstar, every track and field meet’s organizer wanted to have Bubka competing in their meet and they were ready to put an high price for that. When he retired from track and field in 2000, he has left a hole in his sport because there were no athlete like him. If track and field is a really watch and famous sport, thanks to Serguei Bubka. The next big superstar in track and field was Usain Bolt. He was really dominant and famous but he has a different impact. Bubka has changed the way to practice, to do his sport. He also changed the visibility of his sport at a global scale. He changed the way a track and field athlete can live in term of money, in term of trainings.

Post by emiljouannetaud Sat Nov 21, 2020 11:13 pm

On this week’sAPP, I’ll do a flashback moment: The high jump final during the 1968 Olympic Games.
Previously, High jumpers used the scissor jump technique wich consist of passing one leg after the other over the bar. Today, this method is very rare espacially at top level, but at the time, this wa the most efficient technique until a guy from Portland tried something new. Dick Fosbury who used the technological progress to his advantage (mats were introduced in high jump during late 50’s, early 60’s). The technique consists of rushing forward, leaning on your outside foot and throw yourself head first, back to the bar, and clearing the bar. It was the first time we saw this kind of jump at the Olympics. Other athletes had already tried this technique before like Bruce Quande. But, Fosbury had the audacity to attempt this technique at this pinnacle of sports.
The Olympians were simply shocked because Fosbury erased the bars one after the other on the first try. He finally adds a fail next to his name at 2m22 but clears it on his second attempt. When the bar rises again, they are just two jumpers in contention: Fosbury and his compatriot Ed Caruthers. The two men failed twice at 2m24, before Fosbury rose over the bar on his third and final attempt. He claimed the gold medal in a unique way. He was the new superstar of the discipline. Coaches around the world are furious, but the Mexican public is in heaven. Fosbury has just broken the Olympic record along with his personal best. Beyond the numbers, he especially changed the high jump forever. In the space of a few years, the dorsal roll becomes the dominant technique.
Nowadays, all great jumpers have adopted it because it is the most efficient technique, although some have resisted over the years. In 1978, Vladimir Yashchenko established a World Record using the scissors technique. Since then, all the athletes who won major competitions or broke World Records used the Fosbury. Surprisingly, Dick Fosbury will no longer be able to be at his prime again. He failed to qualify for the 1972 Olympic Games. Quickly after that, he retired from track and field and will be remembered as a legend of High jump forever.

Émil's APP Empty Re: Émil's APP

Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Nov 22, 2020 9:05 pm

This APP covered two weeks. In this APP, I’m gonna talk about Sebastian Vettel and his formula 1 career. He is one of the greatest formula 1 driver ever with 4 world championships. Without further due, let’s dive into the career of the german driver :
2006 : The beginning :
Sebastian Vettel was under contract with BMW and he was promoted 3rd pilote of the BMW-sauber team. During the second half of 2006, he took part of different grand prix where he drove in free-practice. He was already performing well like in Monza where he signed the fastest lap-time in free-practice.
2007 : The turn-arround :
In 2007 during the first half of the year, Sebastian Vettel was the 3rd driver of BMW-Sauber but The main driver Robert Kubica had a crash in canada, so Vettel replaced him during the Usa grand prix where he became the yougest driver to score a point in a formula 1 race with 8th place. He was traded during mid-season market. He has a contract with Scuderia Toro Rosso, the Red Bull secondary team. His best result was 4th place in Shanghai after starting 17th on the grid.
2008 : The reveal of a talent
During this year at Toro Rosso, Vettel showed a huge potential because, for hi sage, he was driving very fast, intelligently as well. The young german became the youngest driver to start on pole position in Monza and the youngest driver to win a formula 1 race in Monza as well.
2009 :  The beginning of an Era :
At the beginning of the 2009 season, Sebastian Vettel drove for Red Bull racing team alongside Mark Webber. The two drivers offered the second place for Red Bull in the constructors Championship this year. Vettel had a very good season with his new team finishing 8 times on the podium, snatching 4 pole positions and he won 4 races. This impressive season will put him just shy of the first place in the drivers championship. Vettel finished second in his Red Bull behind the new World champion, the british driver Jenson Button in his Brawn GP F1. The best is yet to come for Vettel.
2010 :  World champion :
Red Bull kept his driver lineup for the 2010 F1 season with Vettel and Webber. The german driver took pole position on the first race of the season in Bahreïn. He led most of the race but he has a spark plug failure wich cost him the win. He finished fourth. He took his first win of the 2010 season in Malaysia and finished second behind his teammate in Monaco. The drivers Championship battle was close between three man : Webber, Vettel and the two times World champion Fernando Alonso. During this season, crashes, engine failures, puncture made the championship really close between drivers. The end of the season was really exciting. Vettel was showing his true potential winning 3 of the 4 last races. In Korea, Vettel had an engine failure and Alonso won this race. With the 1–2 finish in Brazil, Vettel and Webber secured Red Bull Racing's first Constructors Championship.  At the start of the last race in Abu Dhabi, Vettel was 15 points behind Alonso and 7 points ahead of Webber. Vettel delivered a brilliant race snatching pole and the victory, finishing ahead of Webber. Alonso finished 7th wich means Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 World Champion.
2011 : Redemption :
Vettel began the season as the reigning world champion. The pressure on him was huge. The german driver had the best start he could have for his season by taking pole position and victory on the first and second race of the season. Vettel dominated the 2011 season head and shoulders above the rest of the drivers. Little problems will annoy him like radio problems with his team or The FIA who banned specific shapes of car parts like the diffuser. Despite these little issues, Vettel finished the season with 11 wins, 17 podiums and 15 pole position. Webber and Vettel secured a second constructors championship for Red Bull racing. Vettel was a two times world champion and seems unstoppable for next season.
2012 : Alonso / Vettel : The Rematch :
At the star of the 2012 season, Fernando Alonso is still in red for Scuderia Ferrari while Red Bull has his winning duo composed of Vettel and Webber. 2012 saw Vettel won his third consecutive world championship wich puts him equal to Ayrton Senna. Like in 2010, the championship was decided on the last race between Alonso and Vettel. In Brazil, Vettel has a 13 point advantage over Alonso and he needed 4th place for securing his 3rd title. During the race, Vettel had a collision with one of the backmarkers while Alonso was in the top 3. During most part of the race, Fernando Alonso was world champion but Vettel managed to recover from his spin and finish 6th while Alonso finsihed 2nd. Vettel was World champion again 3 points ahead of the spanish driver. In this drama, Red Bull added a third constructors title to their collection.
2013 : The Legend :
This year was the most dominating season Vettel ever had. Out of 18 races, he won 13 of them and equaled the record of most wins in a season and most wins in a row (9). He finished with an astonishing 397 points. He won his 4th title in a row making him the 3rd best driver of all time in this category. He was so dominant, he was crowned World champion 4 races before the end of the season. Red Bull also claimed his fourth constructors title. Vettel had change the rules this year, his celebration was doing donuts at the end of the race wich was forbiden before. But at the end of the season the FIA allowed that.

Émil's APP Empty Re: Émil's APP

Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Nov 22, 2020 9:06 pm

This is the second part of Vettel's career review.
2014 : The end of a chapter :
With the new regulation, Formula one engine changed. Before they used V8, now It is an hybrid V6. Red Bull unfortunately doesn’t have the best engine this year. It was a poor season for Vettel who finished fifth in the drivers Championships and doesn’t have any victory this season. His teammate Daniel Ricciardo won 3 races with Red Bull. It was time tchange for Vettel.
2015-2016 : Ferrari at the top ? :
Vettel signed a 5 years contract with Scuderia ferrari with the goal of claiming a 5th drivers title. But, the big problem was Mercedes. The german team who is a recent team is clearly dominating the hybrid era of formula 1. Vettel struggled to win frequently because his car was underperforming compared to the mercedes. Despite that, Vettel won 3 races in 2015 and 0 in 2016 and finished respectively 3rd and 4th in the drivers championship.
2017-2018 : Championship hopes :
During these two years, Ferrari and Mercedes were much closer than before. The battle between Vettel and Hamilton was on. Vettel started the 2017 season brilliantly with 4 wins and 8 pofiums of 10 races but the he fell short of winning his fifth title because of mechanical issues during the second half of the season. 2018 was the closest ferrari woulf get to Mercedes in term of car. But Vettel failed in his mission to bring another title to Ferrari because he made too much mistakes on a track. He had a good season but a disapointing one. Without all this mistakes, he would have won a 5th title.
2019-2020 :
Vettel will continue to struggle during these two years. The car doesn’t suited his driving style. Therefore he made too much mistakes or can’t drive at his full potential. But he still won some races during this period. In 2021, Vettel will sign with Aston Martin wich, hopefully can put him in a contender place for the title next season.

Émil's APP Empty Re: Émil's APP

Post by emiljouannetaud Sun Nov 22, 2020 11:43 pm

On this week's App, I will review a flashback: the ultimate garden clash.

During the covid 19 break, the IAAF had a great idea : making a backyard pole vault contest between the top 3 guys in the event.
Renaud Lavillenie, Sam Kendricks and Mondo Duplantis were the 3 athletes to put on a show .
Duplantis, and Lavillenie, each cleared a height of 5m 36 times over a time of 30 minutes. Both had one miss. Sam Kendricks had clear the bar 26 times. This was brilliant because it was almost like a track meet but during the pandemic.
The  idea came from the Frenchman because each of the 3 guys had a backyard pole vault setup and the 30min format was chose  because adjusting the bar wasn’t practical without officials. 5m was a pretty easy bar for the 3 competitors. This was very different for the pole vaulters because in a competition or in training, you don't jump as much as you can in 30 minutes. At the end they all were exhausted because it was intense physically but also on a mental aspect. Keeping the focus for 30min straight for clearing the bar is impressive. A few weeks later, a girl edition of pole vault backyard was organized featuring Sandy Morris, Alysha Newman and Katie Nageotte. Same goal same rules but the bar was at 4m instead of 5. Sandy Morris won this challenge with Newman 2nd and Katie Nageotte third. It was really cool to see the IAAF doing that kind of events during a tough time.
