Final Discussion topic

Hi everyone,

Last class today and last topic too.

I want you to review the Semester's English classes. What did you like, what could be improved, changed, removed? What suggestions do you have to make NEXT year's L3 S1 a better experience for the students? The outline for the second semester is already set-up but I would like you to say what you think you need during the second semester and how I can maximise your learning and your enjoyment of English. Feel free to be critical as I can only improve my classes by constructive feedback from the people I want to help the most, I understand that I'm an "old man" who may be losing touch with the latest generation and their methods of learning.

It's a hard one! It was good because people had the opportunity to speak, no matter the mistakes, during discussions and games. I don't think the French people understand you, though, when you're speaking. Not your fault Maybe a little more simple words? Sometimes, only. And for the papers - vocabulary and grammar tests - we should have had more explanations, rules... But it's due to lack of time. Not your fault
The last thing: I would punish people for learning a speech by heart because later they sound as if they were reading from their minds and it's suuuuuper boring.

It was a pleasure to come to your English courses ! Your teaching way is very funny. I think it's the best way to relax and encourage the students to do homework without complaining. Your proximity incites everyone to respect you and that's very important in my opinion. The forum is a great idea to communicate and (maybe) inprove our english level.

I find your courses really good because it's a pedagogy which we aren't used to, this is the first time I go to English classes whithout being afraid of feeling ridiculous faced whith other people who speak better English than me because games or small group discussions allow us to be more relaxed and allow us to confront a real discussion what we have for many of us never done in English courses that we had before. I liked the forum because I think it's an interesting way to make us speak English because we deal with various subjects. I also found the TED talks very interesting because this TED talks allow us to discover things while practicing oral comprehensionin English.
I agree with Laurine don't change anything, your courses are great !

I totally agree with everything that has been said! During this semester we have another approach of courses, less "academic", but during an hour and a half we really spoke English, and the course wasn't boring !!!!!

Hi John,

Thank you for the wonderful course, I am so happy I will obtain the number of credits I am supposed to. I guess you can give French students some "fill in the blanks" exercises of English set phrases and idioms. I enjoyed such exercises much more than grammar exercises. What I will remember from your course is the phrase "I have the memory of a gold fish".

Aleksandra, why are you so condescending towards the French students? For the oral it was you who didn’t understand the teacher very well since he clearly asked to not use any notes?

Anyway I really loved the English classes and don’t have any remarks to make. The way you taught us was very different and I liked that a lot!

John I loved your English classes, they were the best I ever had! I enjoyed having the occasion to practice my speaking in a cheerful ambiance. Your classes and those of David completed each other very well.

I really liked the game we played called Taboo and I’m going to buy it probably, in English of course, to playfully practice with my friends.

This semester was really amazing. A good atmosphere, the pleasure and many jokes, while learning English. English courses passed in an incredible speed and we are not bored. You really like your job. You enliven so well this teaching.

For my part, everything is positive, really. I wish to you, good luck for the rest, because I study in ERASMUS for the next semester.

This semester, I really enjoyed the English classes ! It was very different from what we are used to do during English classes. Your method is cool because it allows students to speak and pratice the language. Then, the small work groups enable the students who are more shy or in difficulty to speak without feeling too stressed or judged.

It was super pleasant to have you as English teacher, no kidding, in middle of all this work it was less pressuring!
I really enjoy the way you teach things, mostly because I did some huge progress in English last year and thanks to that I am able to understand your jokes ! (Not the one with football but that's an other issue).

I really like the way you make everyone feels comfortable, french people can be soooooo afraid to speak in English, that's insane (not really insane when some people tell we are BORING, I think if we are ALL like that the problem is maybe somewhere else ??? It's not really nice things to say regarding we are all making efforts, speaking with confidence in English it's not a skill you born with. People shouldn't be so judgy)

Whatever you John achieve to make everybody confident, and that's really really good, and I think it's the good way to teach English... So you should definitely keep on with this! I never saw so many people enjoying English class like this.

I really don't have any complain... Because it's well organize, we learn some economic words before and in this year it's all about communicate, don't be afraid of mistakes, and be prepare to speak and be understandable even if it's not correct, because it won't be with few hours of English per week.
So thank you for this semester ! It was awesome you did a great job, I mean it !

Hi John !

I believe that watch TV shows in totally english and assist in a english class with a "real" (sorry for the expression) english teacher it's a good way to improve our english. Yes, in fact sometimes I don't understand what you've said but it exactly why I have made efforts.

Moreover, with M.Fur I thought have a good expression and comprehension level but it's not the case. I have discovered that I could express oneself in written but it's not really the case in oral expression. I have not lot of vocabulary and I think in french before talking. But with your exercices and your energy (and your jokes) I think my level had progress.

For all, I want to say thank you. Your teaching's way its that I love on the education system : your a really really good teacher because you're different as others "strict" teachers.

You really suprised me, i was not expecting a class teacher as you! To be honest, just stay yourself, keep making jokes and you got it.
You want us to communicate, and in my opinion it's the best way to learn us English, as the purpose of a language is to be talk.

I really enjoy this course. The atmosphere in English class was very cool and permits to feel more comfortable in English. Watching series or movies and post our feeling in the forum is the best solution to improve our English level unknowingly. Because we have to search for words, I think it’s the best way to remember.

Thanks to this course, I have realized that the most important thing is to talk and be understood, mistakes it doesn’t matter. Now, I feel more ready to go to the Slovakia at the second semester.

I really enjoyed this course this year, less scholar, more fun!
The mix between series and some topics about recent facts or actuality is a good combination, I think. So we had serious discussions and at the same time carefree discussions, which changes from the past years, it was cool and no stressful.
I will ask for a Taboo for Christmas, it was a lot of fun!
Thanks to your accent, I will probably understand better English people during my next travel (last time, some of them spoke too fast and they were not patient), before, I used to understand better the American accent.
I don’t think you should change something in your class.
