The handmaid's tale Empty The handmaid's tale

Post by marie brachet Sun Nov 05, 2017 6:19 pm

Hello everyone!
I've started to watch "the handmaid's tale", a science fiction serie. I decided to watch it after I saw some articles about it on the Internet so I was curious to watch it. It takes place in the future in a totalitarian society and talks about women conditions. Fertility rates collapse as a result of sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution so women loose their rights and their role becomes only reproduction. The main character, Osborne, renamed Offred is the Handmaid assigned to the home of Gileadan Commander Fred Waterford and his wife. She is subject to the strictest rules and is observed continuously. Offred remember the time before when she was married with a daughter and had her own name and identity. Now she can just hope that she will live free someday and be reunited with her daughter. That's an interesting serie, I want to know what will happen in the end, if handmaids will succeed in overthrew the totalitarian regime but there is a dark atmosphere throughout the story. I post the trailer here:

Hi Marie!
I am really happy to see you started watching the Handmaid's Tale, it is my favorite new show of 2017! I love dystopic stories and I felt like this one was very smart and realistic, even if the book was originally written decades ago, which shows us that the way our society is treating women hasn't really evolved in the space of 50 years.
I hope you will watch it until the end because it is a beautiful show Smile

Hi Elsa and Joachim! Elsa, I agree with you, this serie seems very realistic and this is why it is so frightening. When you Watch it, you think that it could really happen, Margaret Atwood had already a futuristic vision about women conditions.
Joachim, I have ever heard of this serie, it is on my list of series to watch! Wink Is it the same kind of serie that The handmaid's tale?

Hi Marie,
This TV show seems so interesting ! But it seems like a long serie... Is it long to watch this TV show ? Because with the "Netflix era" it is difficult to watch every series, you always have to choose or at the end you will only be doing this...

Hi Amarande, I've watched The Handmaid's Tale and each episode lasted from 45 to 55 minutes and their is only 1 season of 10 episodes. I agree with Marie : That's an interesting series, we have empathy for the characters so we want to know what will happen in the end. We want the best for the main character...

I recommend you this series, that's not boring and that sound very realistic. That's not my favorite show of 2017, but one of the best  cheers .

Hi everybody,
Like Amarande said, this TV show seems very interesting ! I agree with her, in Netflix, it is difficult to watch all the serie you want ! Crying or Very sad
By the way, this fact remember me the polimic in Canne's festival : Pedro Almodovar refused to select a Netflix film to the competition because of the reason of "not accessible to all people". But other actors like Will Smith was disagree with him and wants to encourage Netflix film even in a public festival !

Like Marie and Vincent said this serie seems very realistic ... it is frightening ! Neutral

Hi Marie !
I didn't saw the TV series the Handmaid's Tale but I recommend you to read the book who inspired the series it is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. When I was in high school I read it and it was very pleasant and easy to read. I have a friend who read the book too and she told me that the series is very faithful to the book !! I will probably watch the series !

Hi Marie,

In my opinion this serie is interesting because it seems to be realistic like said Vincent. It is an distopia where the fertility problem will restrict freedom and can be transform the society. The upper class abuse of their power...but how to organize the revolution ? I will see the episodes Wink
