Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31, the Day before All Saints’ day. Very importante festival in most contries.
Halloween is at the beginning a Celtic celebration of Irish origin: the Celtic New Year.
About 3000 years ago, the Celtic calendar did not end on December 31, but on October 31. And this last nigth of the year was the night of the god of death (Samain).

In October the nights get longer and legend has it that ghosts used to visit the living. So to prevent ghosts from haunting them, the Celts had some rituals, including dressing in terrifying costumes to scare the ghosts and gathering to celebrate on the evening of October 31. It was the irish immigrants who brought the Halloween tradition to the United States with them!

The English word Halloween is a kind of the expression « All Hallows Eve », which means the day before All Saints’ Day, October 31.
Originally, the Halloween symbol was a turnip has graduelle been replaced bye the pumpkin, which grows in October and is much easier to carve! Son it was the pumpkin that gave the current Halloween version its orange colour.
