Learn english and Enjoy

Hello !
I want to expose what is my references of videos, books or websites, that are helpfull and distracting.

A book I enjoy to read : Hemingways Chihuahua and other mysteries, Peter Flynn

An event I was happy to participate: The "Cafés linguistiques" at the Buveur d'encre, in Angoulême

Some websites really interesting : www.elllo.org and ORORO tv

So I will present them !  

Hemingways Chihuahua and other mysteries, Peter Flynn is a Historical Fiction book which tell about stories on famous people. It tells a funfact on Queen Elisabeth, Ernest Hemingway or on Einstein. And this funfact can be a fake or the reality and is to you to guess it at the end. For the answer you have to check on the website.

It is short story, the vocabulary is easy to understand and it is often funny or with suspens so if you advice you this kind of book. It is the Paper planes edition and it offers a new style of English literature. Each novel is an original creation written and you can go on the website to listen the audio of the novel if you buy the book (www.paperplanes.fr).

Today it was the "Cafés linguistiques" section in the Buveur d'Encre at Angoulême. The place is nice, and seems to be a big english living room. There are a lot of books and old furnitures, large wooden bookcase, very comfortables sofas and a warmfull stove.

So when you arrived you see, many tables where it is written the language which will be spoken, for exemple chinese, english, german, spanich and even, the sign language.

It is a place where is it easy to meet people. You can speak about every subject you want on life, travels..ect
Each person are really enthusiastic and it's easy to speak up.

www.elllo.org and and ORORO tv are websites that I like to watch.

www.elllo.org presents some videos of interviews' people or discussions and after that you have a quizz to know if you have understand the video.

ORORO tv presents differents channels with a various contents, like Big think (on ideas and concept), theEllen Show, College humor...ect.
It is more easy to find good content to learn english here than on Youtube.

Thanks for these posts Megane. I know that some of the M1 went to the Café linguistic last month I don't know about this week. Elllo.org is a site I recommend to students and often use - it's great for real English in lifetime situations with real accents and different levels.

I don't know ORORO tv so I'll go and check that out now.

I have already heard about the "Cafés linguistiques" section ! I wanted to go once but to be honest this is the kind of situation uncomfortable for me hehehe but I'm glad you enjoyed it !

For my last post, I will write about my reading of a book in english. The book is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" wrote by Lewis Carroll.

I never read it before. I just watched the cartoon and the Disney moovie with Johnny Depp.
When you read your first book in english it better if you know the story. Because even if you don't know a word you can continue the story without to be lost.


This story is really full of imagination ! The story is told by Alice, the mean character. It was fascinating sometimes when I have the impression that she looks like me. She is really creative and she is thinking all the time. I like that way of being spontaneous, curious and brave. For example, she's not afraid to face the queen.
This story can be view as a nightmare but the fact she try things and she always has an idea to get out of it. She is an explorer.

In more, at each chapter there is an illustration of a draw. Lewis Carroll himself made 37 pen drawings in the manuscript copy of the story he gave to Alice Liddell on November 26, 1864.
Effectively, Lewwis Caroll wrote this story to court this young girl, of 10 years old..which is shocking !

Reading is a great way to improve your English as you gain not only vocabulary but also the formation of sentences, syntax etc... without the need for boring lessons.

Great point you make about reading a story that you already now.

Lewis Carroll was a man of his era, it does seem perverted now but then it was fairly normal, the world was a very different place for women (and men). He did have a very imaginative mind for writing though.

I've always enjoyed his poem the Jabberwocky.
