Semester 2 week 2 - Page 2 Empty sex education

Post by tiphaine pimond Thu Feb 06, 2020 2:43 pm

I think that in France there is a bad and incomplete approach to sex education at school level. We are taught what reproduction is, the anatomy of the genitals, and what is involved in the sexual act it self (diseases, children, ...). But from my point of view, many stages are forgotten and if I had not had on open family to speak about it, I would not have had the answers to all my questions. There are many families who create a taboo around sex, which does not help children to have all the information before taking action due to many factors such as religion, education, family relationships. At school, the question is addressed briefly because there is just a purely physical and medical approach so making love is on act of pleasure between two people above all.

Sex education in schools is very important for the future life of every young person.

It’s first and foremost about learning responsible behavior
Sexuality education in the school environment contributes to learning responsible behavior, with respect for self and others.
Sexuality education is an educational process which aims to:
* provide students with objective information and scientific knowledge
* identify the different dimensions of sexuality: biological, emotional, cultural, ethical, social, legal

We also learn a lot about preventing sexually transmitted infections
Educating students about preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV-AIDS, involves educating teens about the risks they face and how to protect themselves.

For me this education must be compulsory and is inevitable for children.

This topic of sexuality is very taboo. Too taboo in my opinion. Indeed, we find it a pity that the young people of the present generations watch too many pornographic films, but I think that it is linked to the fact that we do not talk enough about sexuality at school. Young people no doubt want to know more and understand sexuality on their own. In addition, today young people have very easy access to the internet which allows them to easily find sexual images. To counter this ease of research, we could have as a solution the banishment of certain words like "sex" for example in search engines. Finally, if we want young people to have a good image of sexuality, there must be more sex lessons at school.

I find that the subject of sex education is not well addressed in French educational programs, which is a pity because there is a lot to know about it. We are only warned about the few known diseases or methods of contraception, whereas they should tell us more about sexually transmitted diseases, for example. Indeed, it is worrying that the new generation learns about sex on pornographic sites because most of the time it is not the reality...

I think sex education in school in France is not effective. And this is due to several reasons. Firstly the teachers are not qualified and documented enough to speak to students of young ages. Then, there is a real taboo in France which makes the discussion around this subject leads to a lot of unsaid. And the main reason is that the sex education classes are mostly held in the 4th grade while at this age the students are not mature enough. That is the problem because it is also at this age that the first experiences begin.

I was lucky to have a very close relationship with my mother so we were able to talk about this very early, and in college we had sex education courses
