For this first week, we are going to talk about a legend in athletics. Fastest man in the world. The world record holder in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 meters relay, Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt is a Jamaican former sprinter. Usain was born in 1986 in a small town in Jamaica. When he was young he played cricket and football. At 12, Usain takes part in a race in his village, he won and everyone discovered his potential. His cricket trainer forced him to stop this sport in order to take up athletics.

These first results arrived in 2001 when he won his first international competitions, especially over 200m. He turned professional in 2004 and is coached by Fitz Coleman, one of the best Jamaica trainers. In 2008, he participated in his first Olympic Games in Beijing. This is where the legend Usain Bolt was really born. He wins the gold medals in 100m, 200m and 4x100m and breaks the 100m world record by 3 hundredths. It's an incredible performance. Unfortunately in 2017, one of the relay members tested positive for doping, so the 4x100m gold medal was withdrawn from the whole team.

In 2009, at the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Usain won the gold medal in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m. But he didn't just do that, he shattered the world record in the 100m and 200m by 11 hundredths each. 11 hundredths is just huge in a sprint. These world records are still the current records and for a long time to come I think.

In 2011, new world championship in Daegu. He arrived as a big favorite. He qualified for the 100m final with ease. But once in the final, he made a false start. He is disqualified and will not win the gold medal in the 100m. It's a big moment in athletics and you could see all the distress in his eyes. To make up for it, he won gold over 200m and 4x100m.

Then during the 2012 Olympics in London, the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, the 2015 World Championships in Beijing and the 2016 Olympics in Rio, he each time won the gold medal in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m (like always).

But at the World Championship in London in 2017, not everything went as planned. Already, he does not register for the 200m. Then, he finished 3rd in the 100m. And he hurt himself on the 4x100m relay. He ended his career on this catastrophic competition. Some say he did the year too long and that he should have stopped at the top of his game at the Rio Olympics. Maybe. Personally I think that it shows that he is human and that we cannot be the best forever. In any case, he remains a legend of athletics forever.

For this second week, I will tell you about what is for me the most beautiful race of all time ! This is the women's 4x400m from the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich, in Switzerland. As a reminder, a 4x400m is a relay of 4 athletes who perform 400m one after the other, or a complete lap.

At the start of this race, the favorites are the team from Russia, Ukraine and Great Britain. The France team is not a favorite. The French relay is made up of Muriel Hurtis, Agnès Raharolahy, Marie Gayot and Floria Gueï. Floria Gueï is the last relay runner.

Now that the basics are in place, let's make way for the magic of sport ! We are at the end of the third 400m. It's a serious fight ! There is only one 400m to go. At the head of the race, the favorites Ukrainian, Russian and British are in the lead. France is 4th. Floria Gueï takes the baton with 94 hundredths behind the leaders, or 10m behind. 10m may not seem like much, but it's huge in athletics. Especially since in front, the first three are grouped, so they go faster. While behind, Floria is alone. 300m from the finish, Floria is 12.08m behind the lead. It's like if a bus separates them.

At that moment, the French commentator said "no podium for the French 4x400m because there, we don't go back to the lead. And we will watch the fight between Ukraine, Russia and Great-Britain because unfortunately Floria will not be able to return ». Everyone agreed with him …

BUT ! Because there is a BUT ! In the last corner, Floria manages to accelerate and catch up a few meters. She runs at 29.032 km/h ! At the entrance to the final straight, she is only 9.71m from the bronze medal. It's a lot, but it's possible ! She accelerates, she accelerates, she accelerates, 30m from the finish, she catches up with the Russian, bronze medal ! She accelerates, she accelerates, 6m from the finish she overtakes the British, silver medal !! And 1m from the finish, she bent her shoulders to pass just in front of the Ukrainian and win the gold medal for 5 hundredths.

Floria has achieved the impossible ! France is European champion. I get the chills every time I watch this video. I put the link to the video and I await your return.

We are October 12, 2020 and it’s the anniversary of one of the biggest event in the history of athletics, the day when man went for the first time under the 2 hours at the marathon. One year ago on October 12, 2019.

This feat was achieved by Eliud Kipchoge. Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan athlete born in 1984. Eliud started his career very young and he won his first international races in the junior category with the 2003 world cross-country championships in Lausanne. Since, he dominates the world middle distance with three Olympic medals, a silver medal at the 5000m world championship, and a victory in the biggest marathons in the world (Hamburg, Berlin, London, Chicago, Rotterdam …).
At the Berlin Marathon in 2018, he became the first man to go under 2h02 at the marathon with a new world record of 2h01 and 39 seconds.

Now we are going to talk about Eliud Kipchoge's attempts to go under 2 hours in the marathon.

The first attempt took place in Monza in Italy on the racing circuit. This circuit is all flat. This project was created by Nike and is called the "Breaking2 Project". Two and a half years of research with a budget of $ 30 million. The brand has selected the three best marathoners in the world, the Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa, the Eritrean Zersenay Tadese and the famous Kipchoge. 2 and a half years to work on nutrition, physiology, biomechanics, aerodynamics …

This attempt takes place on May 6, 2017, the weather conditions are perfect, the marathoners are ready. They will have to cover a loop of 2.4 kilometers 17 times. They will have 6 pace makers in front of them which will form an arrow in front of them to protect them from the wind. The pace makers change at each turn, there are a total of 30 pace makers (only very fast people). In front of the pace makers, there is a car that projects a green line on the ground to show the pace to keep.

The start is launched, they pass the half-marathon with a time of 59min and 57 seconds. They are on time. But unfortunately none of the three kept up the pace until the end. The Ethiopian did 2:14 (very bad for him), the Eritrean 2:06 (correct) and Eliud failed in 2 hours and 25 seconds. He exploded the world record of 2min but it did not go under 2h. It's a failure but it proves that it’s not impossible.

And so we come to the second attempt, the « Ineos159 Challenge ». This time it's Ineos who is the main investor (nike is still there). This event no longer takes place on a car circuit but in Austria in Vienna, on the main alley of Prater Park which forms a 9.6km loop that is straight and flat. There are no longer 3 marathon runners but only Eliud ! All behind one man. It's not 30 pace makers but 41 who will take turns in front of him. Among the 41, there are the best on the planet with more than 50 international gold medals combined.

There are 5 pace makers in front of Eliud which forms an inverted arrow to protect him from the wind and 2 pace makers behind him. The pace makers change every half turn in a very mechanical way. Everything is calculated, measured, thought out to the nearest millimeter. His trainer follows him by bike to give him his supplies. There is always the car in front.

October 12, 2019, 8:15 a.m., 9 ° C, it's time to make history. Eliud sets off with his first pace markers. He passed to the half marathon in 59'54. (he beat the French half-marathon record) (we suck). 41.6 km, Eliud passes in front of his pace makers and he accelerates. He's going to do it, he knows it, everyone knows it. He crossed the finish line with his arms raised, 1h59 and 40 seconds ! The man went under 2 hours on a marathon ! Unbelievable !

What Eliud wanted to show with this feat is that nothing is impossible. He also compares this challenge with the first man on the moon 50 years earlier. Eliud has proven that with willpower and training, everything is possible !

These records (Monza and Vienna) will not be approved because the pace makers don't have the right to do only one part of the race and because the race wasn't open to the public. The real world record is therefore still that of Kipchoge in 2:01 and 39 seconds in Berlin.

For this fourth week, we are going to talk about a sporting and historical legend of athletics, Jesse Owens.

Jesse Owens was born in 1913 in the USA. He is a grandson of slave and the last of eleven children. Jesse was often ill when he was little, but his parents weren't rich enough to take him to the doctor. Despite his health problems (pneumonia), he went to school which was 14km from home on foot and he helped his parents in the fields. As a teenager, he did a lot of small jobs and he discovered a passion for running. It was at Fairmount Junior High School that he began to take athletics seriously. He trains early in the morning, before class. In addition to short sprints, he also practices high jump, long jump, but also football and basketball.

In 1928, he began to set records at the junior level in high and long jumps. The same year, Jesse met Charley Paddock, Olympic champion, and it was from this meeting that his desire to participate in the Olympic Games was born. During his three years of study he won 75 races out of 79. On May 25, 1935, within an hour, at the Big Ten Conference Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jesse Owens broke or equaled six world records. It’s just amazing ! Each of his records is accompanied by crazy anecdotes.

On June 20, 1936, Jesse Owens broke the world record for the 100m in 10’’2. This performance qualifies him for the next Olympic Games. And it's here that the history comes into play.

We are in 1936, the Olympics are organized in Berlin in Germany. And the leader at this period is none other than Adolf Hitler. Hitler wanted to receive his Olympic Games to propagate his ideas and show his superiority to the whole world, it was propaganda. It was to be the triumph of Nazism, of the Arian race and of the white man …

But all his plans fell through when Jesse wins the master disciplines of athletics (100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump). All this under Hitler's eyes. A black man had just beaten all the white men. It was unthinkable for Hitler who blindly believed in his Arian race. In addition, during the long jump, the German Luz Long befriended Jesse and it was he who advised him to win. The image of his two men congratulating each other annoyed Hitler.

Jesse made history for beating Hitler in his games and for being the first internationally renowned black sportsman (and as the best sprinter of the interwar period). Only the great Carl Lewis will match Jesse's performance of winning 4 gold medals in athletics in the same olympic year.

The legend tells that Hitler would not have praised Jesse for his victories. But Jesse said in his memoir, « Hitler didn't snub me, it was our President (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) who snubbed me. The President didn't even send me a telegram. » In fact, despite having beaten Hitler, Jesse Owens remained a black man in the USA in 1936. The president therefore didn't invite him to the White House and he still didn't have the right to sit at the front of a bus.

For this fifth week, we are going to talk about a champion family. The Ingebrigtsen family !

In sport, there are many known siblings. The Williams sisters in tennis, the Schleck brothers and the Yates brothers in cycling, the Boe brothers and the Fourcade brothers in biathlon ... There are plenty of them. But here we are not going to talk only of two brothers or two sisters, but of three brothers who dominate the athletics in middle distance at European level and soon world level. The Ingebrigtsen brothers !

This family is actually made up of seven brothers and sisters. From the oldest to the youngest there are, Kristoffer, Henrik, Filip, Martin, Jakob, Ingrid ans William. The parents of this family are Tone Eva Tønnessen and Gjert Ingebrigtsen. But the three that interest us are Henrik, Filip and Jakob.

Let's start with Henrik. Henrik is the oldest of the three champions. He was born in 1991 and is therefore 29 years old. He started his professional career at the age of 16. In 2012, he won the gold medal at the European 1500m championship. The same year, he was crowned European cross-country champion and finished 5th in the Olympic Games over 1500m. This is the year that the Ingebrigtsen legend began. In 2013 and 2014, he chained the titles of European champion over 1500m, 3000m and 5000m. Since then, he has won less gold medal because first he was older and above all because his two little brothers are becoming stronger than him. He still finished second in the last European championship over 5000m (behind Jakob) and he was in the final of the last Olympics. He still has the Norwegian 3000m record in 7min and 36 sec !

The second champion is Filip. He is 27 years old. In 2016, he became European champion in the 1500m in Amsterdam (just ahead of Henrik). In 2017, he won the world championship bronze medal over 1500m. It's an incredible performance. It is very rare that a European in white skin tone wins a medal over long distances. In 2018, he is European cross-country champion. Since then he is often injured but he holds the Norwegian mile record in 3min and 49 seconds.

Now let's move on to the youngest champion and yet perhaps the strongest. Jakob Ingebrigtsen ! (He's my favorite athlete after Kilian Jornet) Jakob was born in 2000. He is only 20 years old ! And yet he is already 4 times European cross-country champion under 20 years old. It means that he never lost this competition whereas the first time he was only 15 years old against boys of 19 years ! It's incredible ! In 2017, he was European junior champion in the 5000m and 3000m. In 2018, he finished 2nd in the 1500m and 3rd in the 5000m at the World Junior Championships ! It's just crazy for a Norwegian ! The same year he became European champion in the 1500m and 5000m in Berlin but not in junior, in all categories combined ! When he was only 17 years old ! He beat the best Europeans at 17 ! It is unthinkable ! And in 2019, he finished 4th in the 1500m and 5th in the 5000m at the world championship (when he was only 19 years old). At 19 he was in the top 5 in the world in his discipline ! I have no more superlatives ! he is the best ! He has 4 junior European records, 1 junior world record and 1 European record in all categories.

Two years ago, I told myself that I could still become a top athlete because the athletes were older than me so I told myself that I had the time. But when I saw Jakob become European champion when he was only one year older than me, I understood that it was too late! Jakob is a huge source of inspiration and like Eliud Kipchoge he proves that nothing is impossible. Moreover, if you remember the pace makers which helped Kipchoge to break the world record, know that the Ingebrigtsen brothers were among the pace makers !

Also noted that the coach of the three champions is their own father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen. Gjert was also voted the best Norwegian coach of 2018 and he wrote a book called « How to raise a world champion ». If you want to know more about this extraordinary family, there is a series on their daily life as the Kardashians called "Team Ingebrigtsen ».

You forgot the Brownlee brothers.

I'll never forget this brotherly love:

You are absolutely right ! It is an unforgivable oversight ! And this event 4 years ago is one of the most beautiful images of sport in the world. But looking back, Alistair might have tried to win because he lost again yesterday in Valencia against the great Vincent Luis ! Wink
