Week 3 alternative discussion - why do girls hate Video games?

Hi everybody,

First at all, I'm going to discredit this subject because I'm used to play video games.

As child, I watched my brothers playing at "Taken" on Playstation One and I played too.
Then, a bit later, with my brothers, we played at "GTA Vice City" and "GTA San Andreas" on Playstation 2. Moreover, I had fun to be the "co-driver" of my brother when he did Car's racing. Indeed, I given him indications about turns on the road thanks to the little map localised on the screen corner.
I also watched him playing at "Tomb Raider"

As boys you are, I suppose that you don't considere The Sims as a video game but I played to Sims 2 on Playstation 2 and on Nintendo DS.
After, we were lucky to have the Xbox 360 and I loved so much to play at "Test drive unlimited", a car's racing video game which allows to drive in Honolulu, to buy houses and lots of cars thanks to the money earned during the car's racing.
Nowadays, sometimes I play at "Sims 3" on computer, that's all.

But if you don't considere The Sims as a video game, and you play at Fifa, I don't respect you...

And I look forward the film's release "Assassin's creed" at the cinema, although I never played !

I am the second girl to disagree with this statement.

I used to play Counter Strike and I was so good at it that my classmates hated me for that. Boys would get so many headshots and they would get so angry for being beaten by a girl that they wouldn’t speak to me for a couple of days. Another game I really liked is “Need for Speed”. I wasn’t really good at it, so my classmates started speaking to me again.

My favourite one was… SIMS I really enjoyed building houses, painting the walls, decorating the house, etc. To buy fancy stuff, I needed money, of course. And since it takes some time to earn it, what I did was the following: I would build two houses with one character in each of them, then they would marry, one of the characters moves house to the other character with all his/her money and then I would kill one of the characters and keep the money (and sell their tombstone for $4). Killing a character was very easy in the first version of SIMS: all you needed to do was to make them go swimming and then sell the pool ladder. They could not get out of the pool and they would die. Of course, over the next versions it was not so easy to kill a character, but there were some fancy houses already built and there was a shopping mall, so it was no longer necessary to kill characters.

All in all, I think that girls do not hate video games, but they are not as interested as they used to be when they were children.

I'm the third girl to disagree with this topic

I grew up in a family composed mostly of boys (which is always the case elsewhere), so video games is not a secret for me ahah. Between Fifa, Call of Duty, Need for Speed, Assassin's Creed, GTA, Tomb Raider, etc etc etc. It's right that I can't pass my day to play at video games, but I'm not disagree with those and I like playing against boys ahah. It is rewarding when a girl is better than a boy

I spent a lot of time trying to finish the Assassin's Creed games and Tomb Raider but I'm slightly impatient and bad player so I get angry too quickly when I can not... (I have pain for my joystick..). Such as many girls I have already played at Sims ! (I was cheating in order that my characters are getting rich.. Yes, I know, it's not a good things but I assume my actions ! Ahah)

To recap, generally I think the girls don't like video games because their boyfriends are big geek and they spend their time "pampering" their joystick instead of their girlfriend. Indeed you should know finding the right balance to make you want to play with girls who don't like video games at first.
But don't go with false preconceptions !

Hi everyone,
I think a lot of video games are created for girls (in theory, anyone can play with any video games). Probably not much as video games for boys but it means girls play video games.
Plus, I think Mario is a kind of games with no specific target and there are a lot of games like this one. I bought the first Nintendo DS few years ago and my first game was Super Mario 64!
Maybe some people think girls don't like video games because there are not much girls who play war games.
When a was little I played Dragon Ball Z, Need for Speed and Tomb rider with my cousins. But I never played Sims because there is no fight, no actions ! I guess, you just have to build stuff, it's too boring for me. Such as Carine, I'm not patient enought for some of games.

So, I don't know why (you think) girls don't like to play video games…

I’m also desagree with this topic.

Even if i’m not a real player of vídeo games, but sometimes, in my chilhood, during the interminable family meals I already played and i really like doing this !

BUT, i think as carine concerning the existence of boyfriend geek. For us, (the girls), i believe that stay all the day in front of games it’s not possible, so sometimes we don’t understand our boyfriend. In fact, boys are in a different world, like girls with shopping. Girl’s thing different of boy’s thing !

Which does not prevent me of playing with my boyfriend to call of duty ! love this game, but not more one hour, even if time goes rapidly when we play together !

Fanny you are right, concerning the fact that some people think girls don't like video games because the number of girls who play war games is small.

So, for me some girls don't like video games but is not a generality.

Well i would say that gender has no impact in gaming ability, girls just spend less time playing... as they have to do shopping all day.
I saw yesterday that the ratio of female/male gamers is balanced, just like the population at large. Still, there's a dominant perception that most gamers are men.

In my opinion, this is fault of social stereotyping, sexism and the underrepresentation of women as characters in games (despite Lara croft as main hero in Tomb Raider, i can't quote any other, well maybe Cortana in Halo series).

Personally, i hope that i never been outplayed by a girl. No offense

It has far too much stereotype which urges people of today to say that the girls do not like or do not play the video games. I agree not at all with this assertion. The number of girl who play the video games in increased a lot these last years, to suppose little that it is thanks to the creation of games which aims at the women specifically or no genre in particular. But many girls play games of war, actions and other. We can notice that the number of girls who participate in the tournaments of games (festivals, on-line tournaments, etc.) Or who they also created video of tutoring on some games clearly increased. For my part I am a big fan !

For my part, I think the idea of the girl hate video game is not really true too.
In fact, there is an image of the boy who are playing during the girl cooks, takes care of the house or do shopping that is fixed on our way of thinking . What a shame ! Because today we don't broke this prejudice, men also say that is complicated to learn girl how to play video game.
So, I think playing video game can be a good way to get away but with some limits

Even if stereotypes of the society shows that videos games is a play for the boys, to tell that don’t like to play is wrong.. Girls  play videos games but they are on average fewer than boys and mostly, they play shorter time.

If some girls don’t like plays, it’s because the word create in the videos games aim above all to please boys (the videos games designer create a «male »  universe with wars, battle…). Girls feel less concerned and so less attired. They prefer to do other hobbies.

But fews girls like plays in videos games, mainly betweens friends (teams games, racing games, strategy…). Personaly, I like play with friends but other, I really play.

I knows girls who pass very times in screen. Video games are a very stereotypical hobby. But, girls are more likely to also play.

Personally, I don’t think girls don’t like video games, they just don’t like same video games. Us, the boys, play with games with a long scenario, a game with some depth.

The girls I see were for a lot enjoy to play with games like Nintendo games, with the  Mario saga (Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc …) or others game on the DS or Wii consoles.
After say that, I also meet some girls who played better than man in a “boy game” like FIFA or Call of Duty.. But not you Pauline, Luis will beat you 6-0 on FIFA.
