Series : Westworld

Hi!

I just started a brand new series: Westworld. Broadcast on HBO, critics that is the next Game of Thrones. I don’t know why they all say that?!
Westworld is an american science fiction thriller created by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan). The pilot was directed by J.J. Abrams and Brian Burk (Star Trek, Star Wars / 11.22.63, Lost, Alias, Fringe, …). Anthony Hopkins (Thor, The Silence of the Lambs, Dracula) performs in the series.

Westworld is a fictional place, technologically advanced. It’s an amusement park populated by synthetic androids called « Hosts ». They are reset at the end of each narrative loop. The « Newcomers » are visitors who come in Westworld to do what they want without any consequences (it's expensive so for rich people). But, after an update, androids have bug problems. Their behaviour is changing and they probably revolt against the creators and the « Newcomers ».

The first episode is pleasant. It’s strange, reflected and I think that the series has huge potential.
I’m eager to watch the next episode!

I saw a film in the 70's I think called Westworld starring Yul Brynner that this must be a copy of.

You have a lot of series to watch!
I looked for this film, it's the same narrative weave. In the film, there are many fictionnal world. In the series there is only Far-West. Maybe they will develop differents world. The French title is "Mondwest", it sucks!
If I find it, I'll watch it!

Well, I saw the second episode. This series is so cool!
Normally, Westworld is diffused on the Sunday evening, but HBO decided to broadcast the second episode online earlier because of Clinton-Trump debate who is tonight to showcase. Thanks HBO!

This episode 2 placing us in Westworld. First, we are following two Newcomers who came in Westworld to rape and to kill (the principal reason why people come to Westworld). But, some « Hosts » realize that they are in a fake world. A prostitute starts to dream whereas it’s impossible for androids. Androids starting to be aware/conscious. Some « Hosts » be destroyed because of their bugs. We have seen how the « Hosts » was designed. It’s quite frightening and creepy.
There is a man in black, but we don’t know yet who he is. He is looking for a maze and I know that he is a « Newcomer ». That’s weird !

I have noticed that the piano tune in the saloon was music that I know. I recognised « No Surprises » from Radiohead and a beautiful version of Paint It Black from The Rolling Stones. That’s fun that they put « new » songs in this Far-West world!
Well, this series is pleasant and I learned that the actors signed for 5 seasons!

I saw the first episod. It's clear that is a thoughtful serie.
The episod is long but it's not annoying. There is many information and it's difficult to have good explaination in only 40 minutes. But even if I passed one hour on it and saw many elements, I feel like I have seen nothing such the universe seems rich.
An other point, the opening. Many series make a little music with the title (and I prefer that rather than the young and the restless) but not here and it's really beautiful.
The fear of a robot's rebellion isn't new. The serie take an old theme, make it in a new way and ask actual question.

I saw the first and the second episode.
Thanks Ivan, I watched this serie, and I loved this firts episode, it's a subject very known but it's more various this time. We can see the Western World with the saloon, the sherif, coboys and prostitutes. Robots in this amusement parc play a role and should be satisfy the rich visitors. But there is a problem of programmation of robots, the last update is not good. There is a problem.. Robots begins to be different and adopt a behavior human..
I advise to watch this serie. That can be the new Games of Thrones !

Watched the first. It was okay, will give the second a try.

The robots are still robots and unimportant at the moment, KI presume this will change.

People are people - using lifelike robots for sex and violence.

The question I liked was whether you'd like your partner to spend all that money simply to have sex with a lifelike robot? Would you?

Coralie, I think so too, that the first episode possesses many information. But it’s the foundation of Westworld, so, I think it’s usual. I’m in love with the opening! There is elegance and grace in this opening, it's wonderful. I also love the android at tehe end and the series logo.

The prostitute robot saw things that she was not supposed to see, it’s the beginning of the chaos.
To answer your question John, I should have a girlfriend! Assuming that I’ve got a girlfriend, I think that I don’t let her go to Westworld to have sex and spend all our money! But I think that “she” don’t let me go to Westworld too! Logic!

This week i watched the first two episodes of this serie and at the begining i didn't understand anything but now I thing it's an innovative and interesting concept. Indeed, the story takes place in an attractive park where " guest " (who are real people) can lives in the far west during the nineteenth century and this " simulation" is inhabited by robots created by the staff of the park. In this envirronment vacationers seams discover new parts of themself and they becoming addicted at this world. Futhermore, some creators makes  updates on "hosts" in order to they will be more human, but robots takes control of this place because of there modifications...

I watched the first last week and will watch more next week when I'm at home with my wife. I hope it's as good as the idea (and the film from the 70's).

This serie becomes crazy !
We can see in the 3rd episode the beginning of the rebelion. Some robots have lot of behavior problem. At the end of the episode, the lumberjack poses problem for organizers, I believed he killed the woman but he killed himself.

I look forward the next episode !

The main intrigue is about Maeve, the prostitute. She is still haunted by her different visions and she finds a bullet in her belly, who confirmed that she’s not insane. So, she is not afraid about the future anymore. I love her reaction when she found her different papers with representations of the man in her visions.
Dolores is outside her narrative loop. The two newcomers, with whom she is, starting to discover themselves especially about their behaviour. One is kind and the other is totally shamelessness.
We discover more about the man in black and his quest, what is he doing and why he searches the maze.
In short, again a great episode. We have answers to our questions, but I don’t know what is the enormous project from Robert Ford mind.

I noticed (again) a famous song from a scene which is close from the first episode with the Paint It Black song. Now we’ve got classical music, Habanera from Carmen Suite No. 2.
There will be only 10 episodes for this season…

I see the latest episode yesterday, you have summed up the episode but I disagree about questions. I have more questions, I had some answers, but there are again some questions which don't have answers. I'm just impatient to know the story of Dollores, she has got a key role, and as well as the prostitute.

It's a shame to make us wait every week !

I'm enjoying the series and my idea of who the "bad guy" is changes every episode. firstly I thought Ed Harris character was the bad guy - maybe he was Arnold - then I thought the black guy, now I think it's the creator, I'm sure I'll think someone else next week.

I thought that eps4 was rushed a little bit and we could've seen more detail to the back stories. I think the hosts didn't get their fair time or investment this week. I liked the interplay with the 2 guests with Dolores and the psychological undertones there - quite realistic.

In short I enjoyed eps 4 but thought it was rushed.

The main intrigue is about Dolores and the two Newcomers. We start the episode with a scene between Dolores and Ford, they talk about Arnold, the mysterious guy! So many questions about him! In the episode, Dolores is talking to herself or maybe to someone who might be Arnold.
Another intrigue is coming with the guy who kill himself with the rock. He has some spy cables in his arms, why? Who’s spying? I hope that this intrigue will be dug. Dolores sees a psychic in Pariah, and she had a vision where she saw a cable in her arms, maybe she talks to “spies”. Dolores understands William and Logan when they talk about the real world. She wants to understand, but she normally don't have to ask these questions.
Like you say John, there is a “new” villain every time. I think in this episode, it’s El Lazo-Lawrence who perform the villain role. Logan is also detestable in this episode. The man in black seems nice (except when he cut Lawrence throat!). When the men in black met Robert Ford, I think that we will have answers. Nope! What’s the maze? Why Ford let him do his stuff? I hope that we also have answers about Ford' new project.
At the end of the episode, Maeve awakes and want answers from Felix, the butcher. I’m in a hurry to see what she will ask and what he will do.  

And, I saw the trailer for the next episodes, it will be awesome!

I heard that the episode 7 will give some precision about the back story of th men in black.
Yes, we don't know what he wants, destruction or continuity?! Anyway, he doesn't trust humans, he is more confident with his androids.

On the episode 5, various adventures takes place. I choose to speak about Dolores, William, and Logan.
They meet El Lazo, who tasks them to stop a wagon of nitro. They successfully steal this and give them to El Lazo in order to sell this to the Ex-Confederates. After that, Dolores realizes El Lazo stole explosives for himself and sold the ex-Confederates fakes. Then the ex-Confederates discovered this manipulation and they  apprehend Logan whereas William and Dolores sucess to run away and confront El Lazo, who reveals himself to be Lawrence. In parallel, Dolores had vision and want to find the maze.

I've merged these two since they are about the same series.

Very good episode 5 again, the pieces fall into place.
Ford is completely vague and ambiguous, changing Dolores completely crazy, this character is great.
When the theory that emerged after the meeting of the man in black and Ford, I think that Ford and the black man have got an important link but which on ?

I have to admit I did not really like the first episode but the quality increase, week after week.
The man in black seems to know Ford very well and even personally. But the director of westworld give the impression to be intrigued about this bad guy. So I was not suprised if the black guy knew Arnold and perhaps he asked him a kind of mission before he die. Who knows ? The center of the maze is the key of the mystery...The hosts who are looking for this, became awake with the arrival of the man in black in the park.

Your theory is interesting Hugo. About the maze, it’s so perturbing. I can’t wait to know everything about it!
There are many others theories on Westworld. The most sharing I that William and the man in black are the same guy. It’s on a different storyline. Indeed, the man in black never met William and Logan and the “death” of Lawrence and its reappearance as El Lazo could explain this theory. Another one tells that the series take place on Mars! I think that Arnold is still alive or he gives information’s to someone before his death, like your theory Hugo. I don’t trust, for now, the others theories. But one intrigue me, the child might be a robot representing Dr Ford young. That’s what I thought about the theories. The only thing that we can do, is to wait…

Well, I saw the last episode, it was so great. I think that’s the best episode, for now. I hope that I will say the same about the 7th episode.
As usual, this post is full of spoil. So, if you didn’t watch episode 6, run!

We start the episode with Maeve who tries to being killed to return with the butcher. He explains everything to Maeve, take her on a tour in the company and improve her skills, knowledges and abilities. That’s so surprising, the butcher obey directly, why does he do that? She saw the creation of androids who is beautiful and meticulous whereas destruction is dirty.
The second intrigue is about the spies and the malfunction of some androids. There are anomalies in sector 17, so Bernard wants to discover this area. He found a house with 5 inhabitants who are acting on the orders of Ford. These androids were created by Arnold for Ford; they represent Ford’s family. So, the child is Ford when he was a young boy?! Damn! Elsie went to the fields because she found a transmitter in a theatre. It was Theresa who made bug and modification on androids! Revelation! And there is another encoder who might be Arnold! Damn! Hosts hear voices from Arnold like the child says at the end of the episode.

This episode was so crazy! So much revelation.
I noticed an easter egg. When Bernard is in the basement, we can see a costume who comes from Westworld movie.

This episode 6 Westworld is excellent. At the end of the time, the meninges are in turmoil. Power struggles, lies, betrayals, backstabbing and Arnold mystery we return the brain. Everyone is suspicious of everyone. At the end of the episode ,, Maeve asked that put him in the maximum intelligence in exchange for not revealing the secret shared with the two scientists. This request is carried out with fear by the two men.

the next épisodes arrive tomorrow !!
