So it's pack first with me in the morning.

For the 90 minutes when you're not with me tomorrow I'd like you to research the "video CV" and write your thoughts on them along with any interesting links you might find.

It's very interesting !
It's, indeed, really important to make your CV stand out to beat the competition !
I don't know if it's really used in other countries, and in France, do you ?

It can obviously be helpful for some kind of positions like in sales department, advertising of even marketing.
However, I don't think it could be helpful for me, as I would be terrible on video. The idea of getting in front of a camera and putting myself in the public domain is really terrifying !! This type of CV doesn't fit for everyone, as you have to be confident and comfortable with these type of things...

Hi John,

I looked through all your links to help me understand this concept and personally, I think it's an interesting tool but I'm not sure if I like the use of it. I feel it is an interesting way to portray personality but sometimes it feel more like a video to show-off than a professional tool. I kind of dislike the idea of showcasing activities, families which don’t link to my professional profile, also looking at few examples sometimes it can be a bit cringe-worthy. I also feel it really show off more the editing skills of the person than its personality and really depend on the equipment as well (video quality, editing software). I guess, it can help to show motivation better than just a piece of paper but there is a risk to mingle the professional profile with the personal one. Overall, I feel it can be difficult to find the right tone. silent

Once, when I looked for an internship, I saw a video CV was required for a position. I closed it without hesitation. It's awkward when I put on the spot.
In creative roles like media, design or architecture, a video can be a good way. But for other traditional positions, it had better not.
In my opinion, if you feel easy on the spot, just do it and show yourself. But if not, maybe give up this idea. A bad video may be worse than nothing done. You could find another way to show yourself.

Nowadays, the job competitions are more and more complicated. The one who gets the job may not be better than you. It really depends on 99% hard working and 1% opportunity. But that 1% opportunity is the most important one.
I have a friend’s mother who work as HR in a Chinese company in Shanghai. She told me that all the CV the department HR receives are almost same: university graduate, some internship experiences and so on. And it is really hard to choose the best ones among them.

For the companies, they want some suitable employees to help them make their companies bigger or just make money.
For the candidates, they want a job to make their dreams come true or just make money.
After the economy crises in 2008, it is more and more difficult to find a job. The companies add more criteria to select their candidates: cv, application letter and even video profile…
Whatever we just follow what the companies ask, because we are weak!!! We want a job.
If I’m strong enough or have enough money, I won’t care about application letter or video profile anymore.
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It is very interesting.

I think that Video CV is a good tool. However, I think that it would be good to send a basic CV + a video CV. The basic CV will be used in order to see the education and the experiences of the person, and the video CV would be used in order to see the person, how she/he behave and talk, and maybe to see if there is a feeling with the person.

In my opinion the video CV is a good way to be different than the others. There is some way to make it : face cam, drawing, animation, .... The format depends of the job you want and your own capacities.
The easiest format to make is the face cam. You just have to take yourslef and talk. You can be creative of course and put some interactivity. You can watch the video next to this message to have some idea : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZGxqbDoBUo

Video CV is very useful when HR is very impatient with browsing text and browsing paper resumes. But this is a test of a person's speech ability. I think this way is not suitable for me, I will mess it up!I think I will not look very natural in the video. This can turn into a disaster...

I hear what people are saying. So how are you going to standout in order to get an interview?

If every marketing Masters student who got their degree this year went for a job their CVs would be quite similar - small differencies in job experience and pasttimes. How do you get the interview over the others?
