Nuclear power: Friend or foe? Empty Nuclear power: Friend or foe?

Post by Jeremy Massonde Tue Nov 13, 2018 5:49 pm

Hi everyone,

Here is my subject about nuclear power, is-it a friend or a foe ?

Nuclear power: Friend or foe? Enhanc10

The description is :

Are you for or against nuclear energy? The necessity to respond to climate change has put nuclear energy back on the political agenda as an alternative energy source. This is part of approaches to 'decarbonise' energy through a shift from coal to natural gas, nuclear energy and renewables. Yet, the recourse to nuclear energy is hotly debated. Opponents are rife, as are supporters. Can you adopt each position in turn? This free course, Nuclear power: Friend or foe?, challenges you to do so.

The course is divided by 5 parts :

The first one is "The task". It is a sort of introduction to this subject and the course.
As it is written, we will be able to have an opinion to this question : do we need nuclear energy?

There is some aspects to consider in order to give an answer :

safety
security
economics
environment
radioactive waste management
public acceptability

Each aspect has "for" and "against" arguments.

The second part of the course is some ressources to read.
Here is some links :
For the nuclear power http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http:/www.berr.gov.uk/files/file43006.pdf
Against : http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/data/files/publications/IsNuclearTheAnswer.pdf

Have a nice week !

Before starting this course, I was "For" the nuclear power for some reasons :
- Cost of electricty much lower
- Low greenhouse gas emissions
- Export

The cost to stop the nuclear power will be so huuuuge and what would french people say if there will be an increase of the cost of electricty ? As if they don't whine enough with the fuel Rolling Eyes

Hi Jeremy,

I read your opinion about nuclear.
I know it's very important in our daily life...
But, nuclear is not the only one way to generate electricity...
Don't you think we can find other ways to find electricity which could be more respectful of the environment and more ecological to preserve it ?
I'm afraid that we will become if we don't do anything in the futur... Sad

And what is your solution Joachim ? Use the wind power ? solar power ? Here is an article for you https://www.contribuables.org/2017/06/20-milliards-deuros-pour-du-vent/

Yes, nuclear power is dangerous and some accidents happened but ...
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accident_nucléaire#Principaux_accidents_nucléaires
Tchernobyl (1986), Fukushima (2011) and Kychtim (1957). Here is the 3 most important accident with deaths.
3 accident since 1957. Okay, 3 is too much but with the danger of the material used, I think this power is not as dangerous as you think.

Hi Jeremy,

I think nuclear Energy is no longer the solution for the future. We need another solution, maybe Wind turbine isn't the solution too but our central (in France) are in their old age and I think instead of re build others we need to invest in research of new solutions.
Also, studies have showed that thanks to only Economy of Energy, 23 centrals would be stoped in ten years. By Economy of Energy I talk about public lighting (shops etc..), heating, export, offices, houses….
We can solve Energy and we can change our old model by a new more respectful but in order to get a new model we need to change, transform our way of consumption. What do you think ?

23 centrals would be stopped in ten years just with a better consumption of our public lighting and a more responsible behavior ? There are 58 centrals in France so 40% of them will close only with a responsible behavior ? Have you a link of your study ?
Shut the light when you leave a room is a good way to not waste energy but if the street are plunged into darkness, it will be dangerous when you drive or even if you walked alone. (I know it already exist in some cities)

After reading your articles jeremy i am ok with your opinion !

Nuclear just has a bad image because of the waste, but the advantages that it create are huge and it don't create greenhouse gas. we can't return to the coal factory and the wind or solar energy is not enough mature currently. So nuclear is the better option for the moment and for the years to come before to create the perfect solution Cool

Dear Eudes,

I thank you that my "no-presence" at certain activities touches you so much !
But Eudes... Do you remember what it happens that night ? Apparently no, you have a VERY short memory.
We went (Maelys and I) at the cinema to see "Fantastic animals 2" and Maelys asked in the groupe if someone wanted to come !
AND YOU DIDN'T ANSWER ! </3

Without hard feelings,

Yes it is a study from that french website : http://nucleaire-nonmerci.net/actualite/alternatives-au-nucleaire.html
You are right for the public lighting, initially lighing exist in cities because of security question.. but I talked particularly of the shop light that you can see products throught, it is useless and it cost a lot of energy !!
I've heard too that some cities turns the light of from 00 to 5 AM and I really think it can be a good idea. The continued increase of light has a great economic and environnemental impact but also on our life quality (sleep, animals reproduction etc..). Also I've read somme aricles about the experience of turn the lights off and it true that people are a little bit more anxious but studies have shown that crimes have a tendency to decrease. Surprising, but true !!

I'm not really into nuclear i have to say. But, i can't imagine a near future without it, in france. There's already to many side subjects that we need to solve. it's clear that nuclear is dangerous but the risk are rather low and it's really economics. I can't imagine people not being against it if there is already a crisis for X centimes taxes on fuel. Just my opinion...

The 23 centrals fact is not explicated in your link
But maybe these lights shops can use the light to be more visible in the night, it's maybe a "communication tool" and they pay the electricity so ...
