Final class
Hi everyone,
I've been asked to set work online specifically because of tomorrow's class cancellation. So here it is:
1. Choose something (anything you want) to watch in English and then return to this thread and tell us about it - in some detail.
2. Read what the others have written and give your thoughts on at least two of them.
3. Go to the final autonomous discussion thread and give your views on the subject there.
4. Take care but use this "lockdown time" wisely.
I'm going to sit, watch and mark your videos today and then over the next few days I'm going through all of your work this year and compiling your mark for the semester. I'll send you a copy of all the marks within the next week.
If anyone has any questions for me, or comments or requests I'm available but getting a flood of mail from university admin and STAPS students, so it may take me a little longer than usual to reply.

Re: Final class
HI !
Well the thing I'm watching at this moment is "Love is blind" on Netflix. It's an American TV Show it's like a mix of 2 French TV shows "L'amour est aveugle" and "Marié au premier regard".
This reality TV consists of several steps.
The first is a kind of speed dating, the guys and the girls live apart and every day for 10 days, they find themselves in "pods", sorts of rooms where they can talk but not see or touch each other. They get to know each other and we see that as the days go some people create affinities. So once the couples think they have found the right person, the men make their marriage proposal, if the women accept, then the couple has the opportunity to meet for the first time.
Then there is the second step, the couples all leave for Mexico for a few days to get to know each other before their wedding which will be in about 25 days. In Mexico they can also meet other couples and therefore other girls or boys with whom they had met in pods.
For example there is this girl Jessica, who had affinities with Mark and Barnett when they were talking in the pods, she was more attracted "emotionally" by Barnett but he proposed to another girl so Jessica accepted Mark's proposal. But when Jessica arrived in Mexico with Mark and met Barnett she was disappointed to have accepted Mark's proposal because she is more attracted to Barnett. (she is sooo fake I don't like her).
Then during the 3rd stage, the engaged couples moved to the same apartment in Atlanta. While at the apartments, they all met their partners' families and explored their partners' living conditions.
Then the fourth and last step if the couple has held out so far, is the wedding day, couples can choose to separate or really get married by answering the question "Is love blind?"
Basically I do not like this kind of show, but there I've seen a trailer and it made me laugh so to pass the time I started watching, and obviously after we always want to know more .
I do not necessarily believe in this kind of show, I have the impression that some people are there out of interest .. like this girl Jessica, the principle is to get to know someone despite having seen them physically and she was attracted to Mark, except that when she saw him she didn't find him physically attractive and was fake the rest of the show.
But apparently there are some exceptions, because today three couples from the show are still together !

Re: Final class
Lisa,
I finished Love is Blind one week ago and I was kind of obsessed with it. It's ten thousand times better than "L'amour est aveugle" don't you think ?
Normally, I hate those kind of shows but I think they really managed making it interesting and appealing.
The one I hate the most in the show is jessica (how ironic ! ahah)... what about you ?

Re: Final class
Hi everyone !
So, I have to be sincere, lately I haven't been watching a lot of movies or tv series besides maybe Elite but it's spanish so useless for this forum.
But there is an American influencer or youtuber (I don't know how to name him because he does videos on Facebook). His name is Brand Mondo and he's a hairdresser. Each videos he does last 10 minutes on average and they are really cool. I personnally have seen about 10 videos of him because they are so interesting.
I'm going to quickly explain the concept of his videos.
He watch videos of people bleaching/dying their hair or cutting their hair by themselves and he explain what should be done and what sould not. I love him because he does not judge when someone is doing something wrong, he is very instructive.
Thanks to his videos I've learn new vocabulary related to hair ahah...Now i know what scalp means (cuir chevelu) or bang (frange). I'm not sure you say bang John, i think it's an american word.
I encourage everyone interested in this type of videos to watch it. Plus, his accent is very simple to understand.

Re: Final class
Hi Everyone !
I'm quite happy to be back home and I'm enjoying this confinement to finally be able to watch a show in English.
I've been watching Prison Break in English for a week now and I think it's become one of my favourite series.
I'm in denial of the work and so I've made good progress on the series ahah. Right now I'm at the beginning of season three. So I'm going to give my opinion on some moments of the series. I warn then the people that I am likely to reveal certain scenes.
For starters, I'd say I love all seasons. Each one has a real interest and structures the Michael Scofield plan. I really like season one, because all along it makes you wonder how the characters are going to escape. The unexpected and the twists and turns make it really suspenseful and I love that.
Of course my favorite part is the escape. I shed my little tear when Charles Westmoreland/DB Cooper died, because he is one of the kindest and nicest characters in the prison.
My favorite characters are:
- Mickeal Scofield: because you're necessarily fascinated by his intelligence and his analytical mind, which is the focus of the show. I also like him because he tries to hurt as few people as possible and he will do anything to save the people he loves.
- Theodore Bagwell /T Bag: Even though it may seem hard to believe in view of all the horrors he has committed. I find this character really interesting because of his life and his personality. A lot of bad things happen to him, but his cunning always helps him to get out of the worst situations. In season two we start to appreciate him.
My least favorite character is Brad Bellick. I don't like this character because everything he does is for his own good and he is a coward.
Even if the series is not new I strongly advise you to watch it, especially for people attracted by conspiracy stories and who like action .
Bye bye

Lisa and Jessica,
I also saw love is blind , i agree with Lisa, it's a mix between "L'amour est aveugle " and "marié au premier regard". I liked it because it's entertaining, but I still don't think you can marry someone you don't really know. People have strange ideas, or maybe it's just me that's not open-minded enough.

Re: Final class
Hi !
Since the beginning of the containment, I didn't really had time to watch films or series ; I always have something else to do .
But on yesterday evening, I watched "Tell me who I am" on Netflix. It's a documentary, not really my favorite kind of movies but I really liked that one. I added it on my list a few months ago when I saw the trailer.
It's about a man (Alex) who had a motorcycle accident when he was 18 and he spent several months in coma. When he woke up, he didn't remember anything about his life except for the fact he had a twin brother (Marcus). Besides, he is the only one he recognized when he woke up. He didn't even recognized his mother.
So, on this basis, Marcus helps him to learn again all what he has to know.
He tells him about their parents, about their happy childhood, about all the holidays they spent in France. He shows him some photos, just to justify what he's telling.
Alex believes what his brother says because he's the only one he trusts. And he doesn't ask any question about the fact they (the twins) live in an "appartment" in the background of their parent's house. And he doesn't ask why they don't have the right to have the keys of their parent's house. Just because he doesn't know it's not a "normal" situation, because he thinks
everybody else live like that.
But, a few years later, their parents pass away one after the other and when, just before he died, their dad ask them for forgiveness, Marcus say no and Alex doesn't understand why.
Well, I'm not going to tell you the end of this story... I hope this little description will drive you to watch it !
Just : if youdon't feel good, don't watch it pls ; I don't wanna be responsible for your depression during this period

Re: Final class
Jessica ; thanks for your message about Brand Mondo, I didn't know about him. I think I'm going to watch some of his videos, like right now, because I have to learn how to cut hairs.
By the way, nobody have done his "How to" video about "How to cut hair very well when you don't know how to cut hair" ??
I have to learn fast because my dad and my boyfriend already asked me to cut their hair during the containment... I'll let you know how it went (I hope it will be a happy message I'll send you )
Bye !

Re: Final class
Jessica, well I haven't finished the show yet but Jessica is already annoying me, she makes Mark hope, while it shows that she doesn't care about him, one day she doesn't want to be close to him, another she hands over her ring and said that she will make an effort, I'm sure she did that just to stay on the show. And Mark also annoys me, he is blind, he is the only one who doesn't see that she doesn't care, it exasperates me !
Celie, yes I'm also watching because it's entertaining but I completely agree with you. It's crazy to marry someone you've only known for 30 days. And in addition, it's not really possible I think to erase the physical aspect, the proof, in the show it shows they continue because after seeing each other they found themselves physically attractive, however Jessica who didn't find Mark physically attractive, it didn't work.

Re: Final class
Hi everyone,
I decided to talk about a sports report on Netflix called "Formula 1 Drive to Survive". I watched all my series in VOSTFR even it's in spanish, russian, portuguese etc... so i watched it in english with subtitles.
This show talks about formula one and they have a very special place on the paddock because Netflix teams are inside stables. I usually didn't watch motor sports, i don't like it i prefer football, handball, tennis.. but i loved it. You saw the pression of a race, of all the stable on a driver to reach a good place, to earn points to beat the other stables. This fight between stables is very interesting and you learn a lot of things especially in how they build the car, how 50,100 or 250 people work on a car that only one driver will use and try to win the race. This sport is so special because it's not like in the other sports, the best one doesn't win. You can be the best driver in the world if you have a formula one which is not at least as good as you, you won't win. All stables' cars are different.
The thing, that I found weird, it's the fight between drivers in the same stable. They have to beat the other driver because they are in the same stable so they have the same car so if you beat your teammate that prove that you're better than him.
I really invite you to watch this sports report if you like sports in general.
Have a nice evening!

Celie: I agree with you, Prison Break is one of the best series i've ever seen especially season 1. I'm a big fan of T-Bag too, he always have one move ahead. He always know how to escape or take part of the crew even if they don't like him or want him in.
About Bellick, you will see but you will love him! I swear.
I also like David "Tweener" Apolskis, he doesn't deserve to be in prison and get trapped by Mahone.

Lisa & Jessica :
Hey girls I also watched Love is blind (honestly just the two last episodes). Like you, I usually don't watch reality show, I don't like it. But my sister was watching it and I came at the same moment... you know the following part. I've been pretty surprise to appreciate this tv show, in fact the concept is much better than "mariés au premier regard" and I think it allows participants to know better each other and this increase the feeling of "truth" of this concept.
I'm glad to see Matt and Amber, Giannina and Damian, Cameron and Lauren happy together, one year after the show. I also don't like Jessica because she's not honest, as we can see in the final episode of reunion.
Jess: Craaaps... I should have known the existence of these videos before doing my tutorial...
Célie: Prison Break. or THE BEST SERIES EVER !! I've watch the 5 seasons twice... Micheal, marry me!
And yes, you'll love Bellick.
Camille: This documentary seems good, if I have time i'll watch it!
Paul: I don't know if I'll like it, maybe I'll watch it one day, let's see.
About me... I only started Luna Nera in Italian so I cannot talk. I'll be back as soon as I've watch something in English

Paul,
I liked David Apolski so he was in jail for a little theft and he didn't deserve to die like that, I hated Mahone for killing him. He's one of the characters that did the least harm.
In the end, by learning about the characters' lives, I think all the characters had their reasons for the bad things they did.

Camille : Yes watch it ! You are going to be obsessed with his videos. I'm waiting for your feedback The documentary you wrote about seems so interesting and kind of scary at the same time, am I right ? Kind of like a thriller ...
Caroline : I'm sorry, I did not know about those videos before the quarantine ahah
John: that's what I thought...you say fringe. It's closer to "frange"

Re: Final class
Hello !!!
I watched a documentary about Avicii on Netflix: "Avicii true stories".
The documentary follows the artist in his daily life, from his beginnings to the great international stages.
In front of the camera he tells everything, fatigue, repeated concerts, fame, alcohol...
Through this documentary (very well directed) we really enter the state of mind of avicii, we understand very quickly that such a frenetic life is clearly unbearable.
This life of madness will push him to defenitely stop concerts in 2016.
For 90 minutes, his entire life is paraded from his debut to his worldwide success "Wake me up" in 2013. It soon became clear that his dream of becoming a famous DJ was fading as his career progressed. In 6 years, he played the greatest concerts but he was getting worse and worse because he played more and more concerts, parties, alcohol and lacked sleep. All his excesses ravaged his pancreas and plunged him into depression.
This documentary was released a few days before Avicii's death at the age of 28...
I really liked this documentary because it shows very well how a dream can turn into a nightmare and how, even surrounded by friends, avicii has fallen into a never-ending spiral.

Lisa : You told me about Love is blind" last time, it sounds funny indeed but I must admit that I watched 10 minutes of "Marié au premier regard" and I didn't really like it
It's not my kind of program, but the American version looks better at first glance!
Céline : I I've never seen Prison break and I'm ashamed because I'm sure I'd like this show and especially because it's a classic!
Camille : I also added "Tell me who I am" in my list! You confirm that the documentary is good so I trust you I'll watch it during my confinement
On the other hand, you're pretty good at summarizing without spoiling, I think you could even summarize Netflix if you had to retrain!

Lisa :
Yes it's a true story !
I think the 2 men who speak all along the documentary are the real twins but my boyfriend thinks they aren't. You'll tell me what you think if you watch it
Jess :
Yes, I admit to you I was a little bit in a bad mood when I finished this documentary...
Emeline :
No more retrain for me !

Yo,
I'm not so inspired but I'll talk about something probably no one has looked and will look : Netflix documentary about the dead rapper Lil Peep. I was really septic at the beginning because I'm never confident about post-partum documentaries.
Whatever, I watched it two weeks ago and I find it well done but a little sad on the "substantive" thinking that this may lead to.
For those who don't know him, he was a young "emo-trap" rapper (call this as you want), and he died two years ago from a drug overdose. Despite his addiction, he was a good person, and it’s good to know how to dissociate him from this psychological problem.
The documentary (around an hour and a half) is classical : it shows his life since his childhood (who was pretty basic) and then explain how was his last moments of life. Musically, he was talented and chose his style probably during his teenage years because it was "cool".
Above the obvious excitement of fame and rapping, you can see how good he was, too much kind. He even suffered from this kindness, then he confided to be overwhelmed by the fact that people take his apartment for a squat, and don't return the favor or anything else.
At the beginning he was not a sad guy but medicine (xanax, etc) and drugs (cocaine I guess) makes him deeply sad and so lost. I found it interesting because it's like a warning for everybody, about how bad can be this kind of lifestyle. It's common to heard about american rappers death, because of this.
Moreover, being too nice, never saying "no" can be fatal. His life was no longer his own, he had lost contact with the bases, with family and true friends.
In reality, I watched this documentary just because my boyfriend and his roommate wanted it, otherwise I just really liked what Lil Peep did musically and sometimes I keep listening to some of his music (which are very well known).
But I didn’t appreciate it any more than that, seeing this documentary that shows how a person can end up dying because of his crowd, bad habits, his problems. I saw it in a philosophical way !
I wouldn’t recommend it any more than that if you don’t know him. But it was either that, or I was telling you about an english series on ISTs and relationships ("Lovesick"), which I saw two years ago... What strange tastes I have !
Take care

Re: Final class
Good morning all !
So I'm not going to tell you about a series that I watch in English because I already done it!
However, there’s one person I like to watch at the moment on Instagram, it's Dean Schneider. It’s a young entrepreneur from Switzerland who decided to move to South Africa in 2017 to build a wildlife reserve and a rehabilitation center for animals from this country. There are all kinds of animals roaming around like lions, zebras, impalas, hyenas, baboons, etc.
Dean shares interactions with wildlife on his social networks. He’s an animal rights activist based in South Africa. He speaks English constantly and has a very good accent I think, so I really like watching his videos.
The one I'm going to tell you about is called "How I became part of the pride".
With this video, Dean wants to make us a little closer to the life of lions. He explains that a lot of people keep on asking him how he managed to become part of the lion pride, how he can be so closed to them in all of their situations. He replied that the world of lions is characterized by 90% of body language and 10% of verbal communication through certain vocalizes, sounds (roar).
There is a big difference, according to him, between being respected by a lion, and being part of his pride, of his environment. He says that it wasn’t the lions who taught him their language, or him who taught them his language, but it was Dean who introduced himself into their lives and started to learn their way of behaving them, observing to learn to communicate with their body language.
He also talks a lot about respect, which he says is essential in a group of lions. He explains that there are times when lions need love, attention, cuddles, but also that there are times when they really don't want it and you have to respect that, and stay a little bit away from them, to let them fight or growl at each other.
This is explained by the fact that the lion is a dominant animal, so it’s he who decides. If we don't respect this essential thing, the lion will get angry by making certain aggressive sounds, then by slapping, biting, etc. It’s a pretty special character but it’s like that.
What do you think about it? Would you be ready to imitate yourself in the life of a lion?

My favorite characters are:
- Mickeal Scofield: because you're necessarily fascinated by his intelligence and his analytical mind, which is the focus of the show. I also like him because he tries to hurt as few people as possible and he will do anything to save the people he loves.
- Theodore Bagwell /T Bag: Even though it may seem hard to believe in view of all the horrors he has committed. I find this character really interesting because of his life and his personality. A lot of bad things happen to him, but his cunning always helps him to get out of the worst situations. In season two we start to appreciate him.
oooh Célie I think just like you! This series was and will remain my favorite one for sure! I also have the same characters that I prefer for their high intelligence and cunning. This type of series makes me so want to be part of such a situation, ahaaa

Re: Final class
Hello John, hello everyone,
I hope you're all doing well in this difficult time.
Difficult from a health point of view, but I admit that I find it harder to live without sport, and especially without football
Anyway, I'm going to try to answer each and every one of you
As you all know here, I'm not a serial expert, for the reasons I explained in my first semester oral, but it's true that I could take advantage of this period of confinement to get into it.
But that's not really the case, however, I tried to do the exercise anyway, and I decided to watch Once Upon a Time by Quentin Tarantino in English, (subtitled) and I frankly enjoyed it very much. The movie is long, about 2h40 but I was able to stay focused the whole movie despite the language. I recommend it to everyone, a good scenario, in which a former Western movie star (Leonardo Di Caprio) will try to relaunch his career alongside his faithful understudy (Brad Pitt) in a Hollywood that they find totally changed.
Humor, trash, a good Tarantino in the end.
Lisa - The series Love is Blind is certainly a good series but I'm not a series enthusiast, and if I had to watch one, it would certainly not be this one
Celie - Prison break, I'm a little ashamed to say it but I never watched it ! But all the echoes that I could have had on this show were positive. There are too many episodes so it discourages me to finally start watching it.
Cam G - This documentary looks quite touching and interesting, I think I could easily watch it because I like this kind of dramatic story, and it makes me realize that we are not to be pitied.
Paul: I think I would definitely watch Formula 1: Drive to Survive if I had a neflix account, a little bit of sport at this time is so rare!
Emeline: I also saw that documentary about Avicii!I loved it, you see what the life of an artist is really like and you realize that it's not that easy. You also see that you can be a world star and be anxious before a show, sad story of a dj that I liked !
Take care of yourself
See you.

Re: Final class
Hey, everybody,
I hope you can find something to occupy your days.
Adrien: I understand that you miss doing sports, but with my sister we use the "8 fit" application. It's not bad and it allows you to keep busy and avoid spending your time snacking. ^^
Lauralee: Just like you, I love watching documentaries. That's why I'm currently watching "one strange rock" on Netflix. It's got Will Smith in it too.
Your show sounds great, I think it's really interesting and cute to watch reports about felines. After all they are wild animals and I'm not too keen on their domestication. I find them beautiful by their unpredictable behaviour and it's nice to observe them, but in their natural state.
Emma: I like to watch films inspired by true stories, but I have a bit of trouble with documentaries like this (or at least it depends on people's lives). I'm thinking of going to see the film about the life of Marie Curie for example, I don't know if you're going to go and see it, it's Radiactivity. I like the narrative side that it adds to the true stories, it allows you to be at the heart of the story.
