Re: Week 7 Discussion
Thanks Mr Cox to find really interesting subject, it is a pleasure every weeks!
What will be the future ?
By considering that I have my qualification of CEPE, I would like to find a work which pleases me, work with kind people, and find the big love.
If I have enough time I would like to visited all the places on the world, even Soulac !
But there is just one problem. I’m not sure that it will rest enough forest to breathe in the next years.
In my opinion, the deforestation is a major problem. Men destroy the earth every day just because they want to live better. We do not pay attention in all the animals which die and which disappear.
Maybe I prefer to ignore the future and have the pleasure to discover every day.

Re: Week 7 Discussion
I don't know what the world will look like in for instance 50 years, I guess that maybe we would have enter a kind of post-humanism era I mean that we will live with technologies just as we already know prothesis. I hope we would have find viable alternatives to consumerism and capitalism. But I am not especially enthusiastic, I mean I know that the climate is going to be really tough and that today's basic resseources such as gaz, water and food are doomed to disappear for the first one and to be rarest for the other ones. The level of the sea is going to rise up and numerous beautifull islands are going to dissapear, which means that livable surface area is going to decrease. Moreover in 2060 there will be at least twelve billion human on earth (if there is no major war meanwhile...)...the number is frightning...So I am sure the 2060's human, just as today's one, is going to be a melting pot, with surely awesome values but I am still wondering if he will be optimist for his child's future.

Our world is daily in innovation and this evolution makes a big change in our habit and in our behavior so more and more we will leave and get new ways of seeing the world around us and our life aims.
for the next 10, 25 and 50 years , in the technological progress no one can deny the fact the communication is the main manifestation of this changes; the technology is the most innovation that makes people 24/24 so close to others, to news, to worldwide and hide the distances between us; and in societal we will probably lose our identity and our culture, we will be the same in most thing we do in our personal life; and nationally the exchange of product and most of things we need will be so easy to find; and internationally It is fair to say that the strong powers of the world will continue to establish their dominance over the others who will definitely continue their obedience; and what saddens the most is the changes over the environment who has already been hit hard by our way of living and it will absolutely suffer more as we progress and show little to nothing care about its state; then with all this development, a severe decrease in physical and mental activity will sadly appear as we will rely on machines to do our duties and jobs as well as the fact that our hobbies are more and more virtual and can be done by sitting next to a computer; also educationally we will take another way to get it; it will no longer be monopolized by our family and our schools but it will be sourced from Internet ; finally and on a public matter it’s safe to say that our lives will have a tendency towards individualism, everyone will choose to be closed in his shell, wish means the human interactions will be limited to the virtual world and probably an activity that we enjoy this time collectively like watching TV shall disappear.
The world is changing… so fast that humanity is suffering to keep up with its speed and it shows no signs of slowing down… maybe after the last tree is cut down and the last animal is slayed we will realize we can’t eat our smartphones and computers!

Isn't technological evolution the history of man? Isn't it how we have transformed from the first man into what we are today?
What's the difference between robots and the bicycle? Or the internet and the printing press?
Are we just fearing the unknown and the new?
Shouldn't we see technology as the answer to our future problems and not just the cause?

Some hopeful things : We will have less wars thanks to the globalization, people don’t want to start a war between each country, we want to be friendly especially in commercial activities.
Isn't globalization as likely to start wars as to end them? Isn't capitalism and commercialisation a type of war which could possibly escalate into a real war given the ease of acquiring weapons?

I’m sorry, my text commentary is very boring but .. I write this a Sunday evening and , sincerely, I don’t really want to think about my future when the next future is Monday morning … ! I hope you understand. I promise in my next commentary, I’ll do better.
You are the person best positioned to shape your future. Every decision that you make affects the future for you and others. In fact YOU are the future of this planet!
Monday - best afternoon of the working week! I'm already in the CEPE waiting for the session

You're welcome Solene, my favourite student
It's not so easy to find a topic that everyone can comment on each week - but next week's - the last - is easy!
If you're in Soulac this summer the drinks are on me!
They do but men also think of new ways to help the planet and themselves everyday. I believe in the ingenuity of man - and each of you - to continually save the world everyday and to help people live "better".

The advances in medicine are amazing and these will add to the population that you speak of. Will we be ableto control our population explosion - especially if we're living for longer? 1 child or forced contraception? I'm not as depressed about the use of earth's resources as some of you. It wasn't so long ago that we knew nothing about fossil fuels I'm pretty sure that man will work out how to harvest energy from the air, or more likely from the atom. Once we've cracked the atom, we'll have unlimited energy and power and be able to "cure" some of the ills we've placed on the planet. We'll probably need to harvest the trees because we'll have too many! Sea level is rising and is a worry even in SOULAC but man is creative I believe he'll find the way to "save" himself. Not really sure why governments haven't already invested more in tidal power and protection but I can only believe that is because Europe in particular and the West in general has entered it's decadence and the end of the Western empires are in sight to be superceded by Eastern or African empires. That's the cycle of life. I guess when there is the fall of an empire and the rise of new competing empires there will always be the chance of a world war - that too may be an evolutionary way of thinning and refocussing the population.

You say that we are closer to each other and later that we will tend towards individualism. That's an interesting concept - do you mean that we will ignore distance and form new groupings by interest or do you mean that we'll become more individual within a group idea?
The strong usually dominate the weak but I think we're seeing a shift in power. The West has had it's heyday and is now in decline the East is on an upswing and I believe that Africa will soon have the possiblity to gain great control thanks to overwhelming numbers, technologial and infrastructure advances and the simple fact that the people haven't had the "easy" softening life that we have had for some time in the West.
Educationally I agree with you. There should be a paradoxical shift in education and this is where I think Africa can benefit most. We in the the West are too entrenched in our systems and change is very slow. I can't believe how little the internet has changed teaching and education in France when the potential is immense. EVERY student could be taught by the best teachers in the world for every subject and yet we still have thousands of poor teachers teaching our children!!! It's a scandal!
Re: Week 7 Discussion
I quite agree with Emma's post.
The Earth has two possibilities of evolution :
- a good one : where the technologic progress in the health services, the transports and the mediums of communication will be involved and help people to live together as a true community. We can hope too that the mentalities will change to live in a peacefull world without any war and international issues. But it's quite utopian if We analyse the world of today.
Imagine all the people living life in peace (RIP John Lenon)
- a dark one : wars gonna be worst and global in the future. With global warming the Earth will be uninhabitable : all the humans, animal and the nature are going to die because of a lack of O2 and natural ressources.
I don't want to be pessimist but I think that a mix of both possibilities is considering. We are living in a mad world where the are very good things but very bad and dark things too. The future will change but always by combining all these elements.
Enjoy

We shouldn't forget that there have always been bad and dark things in the world but we hear about more of them because our identification of them and our communication is so much better. Before we wouldn't even have known about many of these acts taking place. Our news also seems attracted to highlighting bad and not good. There are billions of good people doing good things everyday on our planet.
Re: Week 7 Discussion
Imagine the future in 50 or 100 years a vast question.
I think that the technological progress which are faster and faster is going to continue. Maybe we shall be all assisted by a robot as the movie I robot ? We can also imagine phenomenal progress in the field of the medicine, but if we manage to increase our life expectancy, we are going to meet a problem: our population will not regulate any more naturally. Without renewal of the population we can fast understand that the governments are going to get out of breath and aging due to the lack of new ideas. But being given that the information it is the power, we can clearly imagine that we shall be governed by companies as Google or that they will treat them to get their own way.
Finally, there are so many things to be said but I believe that it’s necessary to take full advantage of now to be able to conquer the future.

Yes, I agree with you. Fortunately lot of people are acting for a better world and the medias don't highlight enough their work.
However, if our generation and the future generations don't be more solicitous concerning global warming and the environment in general, with the protection of many natural and animal ressources, a bright future in few years seems compromised.
Building a better future require efforts and compromises.
And not just of a few part of the population but for a great majority.

Now that's a frightening but potentially valid point.
The rich keep getting richer, the increase in population means more poor people. The global companies become the new "invisible" rulers. I think I can use that for a future book.

Possibly we could genetically re-introduce lost species and flora. I think we already have the capability.
This could also become the new form of farming for an increasing population. Would our present stance against GM foods remain intact if food prices rocket without them?
Apocalypse
Sorry for replying so late but this weekend was just apocalyptic ^^, I was so busy .
I have a very pessimistic point of view on the future. In 50 years or more, socially speaking, the gap between the have and have-nots will widen even more.
Because of the overpopulation there would not be enough resources and staple food to feed everyone, so people will die of starvation.
Rising seas, caused by global warming, will provoke lots of changes: lands will disappear under water, animals will die and humans displaced. There will be blood and wars …
As for technological and medical progress, I’m sure that searchers and physicians will be able to cure many diseases. However, on the other side, new kind of illness will appear. It’s a vicious circle.
I fear that the world will become much more insecure, unsteady and people more and more violent.
I may be a bit old-fashioned but I don’t think that technological breakthrough is always a good think especially for education. I have the feeling that the more technology helps us the more we lose our autonomy and capabilities. It’s such a pity...

If we have a more responsible behaviour towards nature and humanity in general, we might avoid the worst.
