Class 3/12 10/12

Hey

We've got 2 more sessions before the end of the year and I can't change the last one into an eating and taboo playing session. At least I don't think I can.

So what are your suggestions, requests, demands ?

We've also got 5 sessions in the new year though maybe I can make the February session a foodie!

Okay here's my suggestion for the next 2 weeks.

Next week Ill give you some dilemma type situations which you discuss in random groups of 4.

The following week you form a team of three for a formal debate against another team of three. You'll need to select your team and then choose the debate you want to do. your homework will be to prepare your debate.

I'll put a post below with 5 debate choices. The first group of three who name themselves in this thread can choose the debate they prefer and say whether they are "For" or "Against", the second and third teams can either choose to debate against them or choose another debate topic. The final three teams will have to choose the opposite side of one of the 3 chosen subjects (and of course the final team will have no choice - it will already be made for them).

Is that clear? Any questions? I'll put links to 5 debate topics below and then you can name your team and your choice.

You are right. you have nothing to prepare for this week (unless you want to read through the scenarios to understand them) but you must prepare for the 12th. I guess I've been feeling sorry for the kid's class and the amount of work you say you have to do.

If anyone would like extra work I've got plenty that I can send you, just email me a request.

btw how did the presentations in English go for the Child's products last Friday?

We were stunning ! We all succeed even if we still need to work on our english accent and the pronunciation of some words, but it was an excellent exercise to do in order to be prepared for the Speed Defense...

The aim of all these sessions is to get you talking (and listening) in as many different "natural" ways as possible. Here is my suggestion for the format of the debate. Please feel free to suggest alterations as I'm probably not so used to "competitive" discussions as you are.

1. The "For" team have 5 minutes to give their arguments without interruption.
2. The "Against" team have 5 minutes to give their arguments without interruption.
3. Each team, starting with the "Against" team, ask the opposition a question which they have to answer. Questions alternate for a total of 16 minutes or until teams have no more questions.
4. The "For" team have 2 minutes to summarise their case.
5. The "Against" team have 2 minutes to summarise their case.
6. The other 12 vote on who wins the argument.

Hopefully this format will mean that the teams need to organise who will speak and about what, teams will need to think of both their own arguments and counter-arguments to potential adversaries' arguments and questions, Participants will need to take notes and improvise responses during the debate (great practice for the speed defence). The links I gave you were simply starting points. You, of course, do not need to limit your arguments to the ones listed there, in fact you'll do better to create your own that the opposition may not have thought of.

We'll all listen to the debates - listening is as important a skill to learn as talking.
