The sercrets of learning a new language
Hi everyone,
So here I am, back with some Ted Talks I've watched/read this week and found interesting.
As we're in marketing I've lured you in this topic with one of the most catching titles. I really recommend you watch the following video explaining how to learn a new language. And yes, you can all do it!
https://www.ted.com/talks/lydia_machova_the_secrets_of_learning_a_new_language
Léa was writing in another post about how we all discuss bad news. The following text might answer some of that. Because after all "Our stories tend to focus on the most extraordinary events, good and bad, because those are the experiences we need to make sense of and that shape us."
https://ideas.ted.com/the-two-kinds-of-stories-we-tell-about-ourselves/
The following was quite interesting as well. Reminded me of the exercise we did for Mr Lurton.
One sentence really got my attention:
" “I’ve learned really bad people are few and far between, even though that’s not represented in newspapers in the culture of fear we live in.” By giving people tools with which they can share their own stories, he’s become hopeful that people are basically good. “People want to have these conversations, but it can be hard and scary. I think about it like jumping in a freezing cold pool. You just have to do it and take that step and do that interview.” "

Thanks
If bad people are few and far between (with which I agree) why did so many of you choose not to stop and help the 15 year old and the homeless man in our exercises last week?
Is it because so few of us "care" for others anymore? Is "community" an idea of the past?

Amélie, I have a great video on Youtube showing how to learn French
John, after we discussed in class about your staps students, I was wondering if you have asked them what would be their motivation to learn English...

Eli, I love you ahaha!
Was it this video that got super famous with lots of likes and views?
I love the cliché of the accordion as background music. I don't speak Portuguese so I don't understand 10% of your video lmaooo.
But I actually love hearing you speak
If I got some of it, you recommend having a dictionary and reading a book, downloading an app, practicing a bit everyday speaking and having a conversation, and maybe something about taking classes?
I believe those are good advice!
And to answer your question John, I believe that humans being are truly good inside, unfortunately, we are taught to fear others through different media and through our families since we're very young so caring for others (strangers) is hard. I believe in the spirit of a community though, I just think that it got developed it different and new ways lately like through social media or through smaller communities with people sharing activities?
Maybe through the school that we attend, the music we practice or the sports we do?

Re: The sercrets of learning a new language
Eli, I have 300 STAPS students and sadly a lot of those have no motivation at all to learn English. In fact they don't want to learn English but it is a compulsory subject on their timetable. The vast majority are happy to learn English and understand it would be good for them to be fluent but they really can't be bothered to put too much work into it. After all 30 minutes of English homework will mean 30 minutes that they can't check social media on their phones. And then I have some who love English and would happily do much more.
The problem is that every class is mixed and so the few can disrupt the many.
