01 : From Pole to Pole
This episode shows how important the sun is for us. All animals depend for their energy on the sun and it influences their lives.
In the Arctic, spring arrives when the sun returns, and polar bears emerge from their den to leave for hunting.
The sun forces animals to travel great distances in pursuit of warms and food, and when a species appears on the land, there are others who hunt them. In northern Canada caribous migrate over thousands of miles, with wolfs chasing after them.
In the high latitudes there isn’t enough sun light for trees to grow. As we go southward, forests appears, home to many animals and insects. Leaves and branches support their lives.
Water is also vital for our life. Cloud carries water in the middle of the continents, but the distribution is not fair. In the Kalahari Desert animals like elephants and buffalos travel in desperate search of water.
…This episode reminds me of why I moved to a new apartment which is facing south on the top floor. I have the habit of sunbathing every morning, but it was not possible in the apartment where I had lived before ;P

BBC Planet Earth Empty Episode 2 : Mountains

Post by Hikari Umezawa Sun Nov 27, 2016 4:26 pm

This episode talks about the mountainous regions around the world from the Ethiopian lava lake, the Alps to the Himalaya, and about the animals living there.
It is amazing that animals adjust to the harsh environment of mountains, or even take advantage of it. For example, the snow leopard, living on the cliff of the Himalaya Mountains, makes use of the snow for hunting; the snow covers them and help them to approach their quarry.

BBC Planet Earth Empty Episode 3 Fresh water

Post by Hikari Umezawa Sun Nov 27, 2016 6:21 pm

This episode presents lakes, rivers, waterfalls and wetlands around the world and the way of life of animals living there.
The water is a full of wonders. The rivers, lakes and wetlands provide animals and fish with a home, and water is an important resource for their life, but it can be a dangerous place; crocodiles and piranhas hide in the water and approach the cows drinking water of the river.

BBC Planet Earth Empty Episode 5 Deserts

Post by Hikari Umezawa Wed Nov 30, 2016 4:52 am

This episode shows different deserts in the world and how animals survive there.
Each species has developed its own way of surviving in such a harsh environment with drastic changes in temperature between daytime and nighttime and violent sandstorms, but I wondered why those species have chosen to live there, instead of living in an easier climate condition,,,

BBC Planet Earth Empty Episode 6 Ice Worlds

Post by Hikari Umezawa Wed Nov 30, 2016 5:58 am

Episode 6 is about the Arctic and Antarctic.
Assuming that polar bears are one of the strongest and most violent animals, it was shocking to know that 1 out of every 2 cubs can’t survive the summer (when the ice melts) and to see the mother bear dies of starvation after miles of swimming in search of food, because the skin of seals is too thick to bite through.
