Final Discussion subject Group B Empty Final Discussion subject Group B

Post by Admin Thu Apr 02, 2015 3:29 pm

I nearly gave you the week off but after next Wednesday you may never see me again! Twisted Evil

So the final topic is an evaluation of the English course this year. I've been teaching for a long time but I always try to adapt and improve my courses listening to the needs of the students as well as the requirements of the University.

This is the first year that I set up an online forum, with the aim of supporting free written expression(which is often lacking in my courses) and for you in the second semester I attempted to allow free oral expression whilst giving oral comprehension from the heart of a native speaker. This follows on from the first semester where the priority was to get you talking in a more relaxed manner. We've had presentations, watching TV for homework, business vocabulary, role play, an audio "controle", a video "controle", a partial TOEIC test, grammar and pronunciation. So what did you think?

Feel free to let me know the positives and the negatives. You won't be marked down for criticism - it's how I adapt and improve. I would like you to particularly concentrate on the online forum work and the second semester speaking sessions - what should I change, remove, add. How can I better serve my M1 FM students?

So over to you...

I'd like to be the first to talk, for the first time to be the first, since we don't have any exam to prepare recently. and I'd like to start with positive side. Back to the time when i was in China, i was wondering what could be looks like the english course in other country. and then we had Fur which was also a good teacher( and "is" also, i believe ). His course was something new in the moment: you got to participate; you got to prepare your presentation. But when the novelty wears off, i realised that english remains english. I mean you still need to catch words and grammars. However, John and his disscussion section lets me know that is all about communication. Once you know, you get to motivate. Even the boring grammar lesson became interesting. i think it is essential and important for learning english.
And there are also few slightly negative side which we can ignore at all, but which is also i have to do. So first of all, the whole forum thing, i think it is a very brilliant idea to let's communicating freely. but the problem is we don't know what we typed is correct or not grammatically each time. So if we don't even know the question, how suppose to answer it. So i suggest john may be able to tell us privately, and we may do better under john's guidance.
Let's move to the disscussion section, which is already too perfect to improve. but if you have to pick the bones from eggs, i'll say that the topics were might not interesting for all of us. someone gave theirs opinion. and elses prefere to listen then talk, which is also can be good, to do some comprehension execice.
and i think its can be beyond prefect if john can have some vocab or reading section. Because the vocab is fundamental after all.
In conclusion, i think that john have already done terrific work during the years. and i hope my little advices can be usefully for him.

I have not much to add to Bingchuan. The forum is a good idea, but as he said, we have'nt got any feedback to correct us. It's a great way to "force" people to write in english. As well as the oral section which is, for me, the best part of your course. We have a lack of opportunities to speak in english during our Studies and it's a problem when we have to talk to someone in a foreign country or during our internship.
For the negative point, I think that there is not enough feedback, corrections when we make mistakes. Even if I'm aware that you don't want to interrupt us or destroy our self-confidence, it would be a plus if you could correct some of our sentences at least, the biggest ones.
To conclude with another negative point, i'm done with the British accent, would you be so nice to switch with a irish one next year ? Thanks in advance for taking some vacation in Ireland this summer Smile .

Honnestly for the ridiculous numbers of hours that university gave to English courses your lessons were pretty good cuz u adjusted level according to students so as to be efficient for everyone and not only a part of the classroom
British humour is not bad too it's important to laugh with jokes or strange accent cuz when we go back to finance lesson it's not as funny as yours ... Smile
The negative aspect would be like Liu or Baptiste said about correcting on writting and oral expression it's important to know our mistakes in order to improve ourselves
Unfortunately our level don t really depend on you totally its up to university to adjust number of hours for english we have only around 17h per week so it won t be hard to add 1 or 2 hours for english lessons..

This is the end...
First of all, thank you John for your mood and motivation throughout the past weeks, it was quite fun and we cannot say such things to every teacher for every lesson.
I agree with most of the ideas you already wrote. It was really interesting to write on a subject every week on the forum, and to try to express our minds orally on wednesday afternoons. To me you should keep on doing that way.
I agree the cons would be not to correct us, I understand it's not your philosophy in a way to let us speak or write as freely as we want, but sometimes I believe some mistakes are too huge to ignore them.
And here I rather disagree with what Stephan said. Indeed I think it's up to us and our motivation to make our own level english. It might be selfish but I consider we've been learning english since high school at least and it's never been easier than nowadays to hear or read some english, so it's not necessarily the university role to solve our lacks about the basics (grammar and vocabulary), even if I admit that 1.5h a week is complete bullshit.
I shall finish by the diversified way of giving marks that I particularly like.
So long.. !

FREEDOMMMMM !!!! (Mel Gibson)
To my mind the system you have set up it's a great idea. All person can improve their knowledge in English through the forum, the grammatical section and the discussion section.
Every weeks I went in the two english class and thanks that i really progress. I have a big lake in grammar and you reduce my gap. The discussion class allow to a person who really want to speak about everything and this is the best way to be more at ease.
So thanks King John.

this is by far the best English lessons I have ever had. You are the most amazing teacher who exists on this holy land. it's good I have 20?
the forum is a good idea to force us to talk in English regularly. It's more student involvement that is the problem in this system.
the second group will allow us to discuss freely. However I think it would be better in the future to launch a fairly general subject (subject "I am charlie" was good as talking about a lot of elements and current issues).
Your methods are good, but it is easy for students to not get involved. should be be a little more strict with the thugs

What is nice is that we do not stress before coming into your course, we don’t ask ourself "what will be his mood this week?” The course is always held in the right mood.

I liked the forum but for the courses I would have preferred to do an hour talking and a half hour with vocabulary for example. There are many terms in English in finance so I would have liked to do a little more business English.

By cons I didn’t like to make a video, I don’t know anything about editing and I'm not very good at filming so it was quite difficult, but I agree that it's cool to have a duty that gives free short on imagination.

I won’t say that you are an excellent teacher cause you already know it but it’s true Very Happy
